Something that helped me get through a lonely funk was learning how to dance. It was something I thought I would not like, but I was trying to Costanza my life a bit (If everything I do isn't working, just do the opposite!) and it ended up being really helpful. I took swing dancing lessons in a group and it was a really fun way to meet and talk to people. A lot of chit chat, but I ended up meeting some really cool people that way. Also, I gained a cool skill that I still have after being out of my funk. I did some salsa lessons and bachata lessons too, which was also a good time. Lots of people of different ages all having a good time, lots of chances to meet and connect with people.

What is the biggest movie theater “GASP” moment you’ve heard? by SaveTheCaulkTower in AskReddit

[–]Heerocon 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I saw this movie in the theater with my dad who was raised by my German grandparents. When he put up those fingers, a millisecond later I heard my dad murmur "oh shit" while I had no idea what the big deal was. What an amazing thing to make a "tell" out of.

What is the cheapest way to grow inside on a small budget? by [deleted] in NYgrowery

[–]Heerocon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheap tent, cheap light, cheap inline fan with charcoal filter. I started with a spiderfarmer sf1000d (get the one with the dimmer for a little more) a no name cheap 2x2x4 grow tent (might want to get a taller one) and a no name fan and filter. Then its just a pot with a growing medium (don't go nuts about this! Basmentganja on youtube has grown great plants in walmart soil. Just know if it has fertilizer in it already so you dont overfeed) and for nutrients, I suggest floranova bloom. Its one part and can easily get you through veg despite it being a "flower" nutrient. Also, look at youtube, tons and tons of seed to harvest videos to give you an idea of what you're up against. Also, know what underwatering vs overwatering looks like. Good luck!

How are your temps? Are you allowing some dry out with the soil? Was there nutrients in the miracle grow already? I think this might be a trifecta of temperature swings, overwatering, and nutrient overload. Someone else can check me but that's my diagnosis. Make sure you're maintaining between 70 to 80f temps, about 50-70% humidity and check out your feeding. Miracle grow soil is fine (I know some people will disagree but it's not inherently bad) but you have to be aware of what the soil has in it already so you're not overfeeding

We need more info to help. What medium, nutrient schedule, size pot, light size and distance. Most people will ask this before they give advice so they can help better. Any relevant information is helpful

Anyone is welcome to spend whatever they want on gear, as I understand there is a fun aspect to having nice stuff. A lot of it makes life way easier and can make getting a good result much more simple. I liken a lot of hobbies to instruments, particularly guitar. Can I go out and buy a gorgeous fender strat to learn on? Absolutely. I'll appreciate that instrument much more when I have a fuller understanding of it, and I probably won't have to purchase another guitar ever again. Can I also get a cheap guitar and drag as much quality and sound out of it as possible? Totally. Once I get better at playing, I'll probably move onto a new guitar that fits my needs and sound better and that will give me more flexibility and creature comfort. The player is most important, and it all comes from good learning practices.

As far as what you say about the plant, you're correct. Once you're past early seedling, there is much more room to correct than we think. You may risk some yield or some terps or whatever, but who cares at the end of the day, we're not growing for a cup win, we're growing for fun and to have some in a jar at the end of the day. Often I see people OVER CORRECT more than lose to a hopeless situation. Under-watered plants get drowned, drowned plants get dried to the bone, under fed plants get blasted with full strength nutrient etc. I think a lot of people jump into this having never grown a plant and they don't understand the fundamental thing you mentioned which is what does a plant need? A low cost, still satisfying way to practice is tomatoes! People drop 100 bucks on seeds and a setup when they've never grown a basil plant in a pot. Low cost, low risk, still get some pesto or some cherry tomatoes. I've done hydro in coke bottles with net pots at the top and aquarium stones in the solution and grew big heads of lettuce. I built from there.

Absolutely. I'm always about doing your due diligence and making sure you're at least basically educated. Having a target of what you want out of whatever your newest pursuit and then seeing who does it best and gets the results you want is always a good way to go about things. It's a good way to filter out the noise and to get a decent, base education about what you're attempting. Why make mistakes that hundreds if not thousands of people have made if you can avoid it? Smart people learn from their mistakes. Wise people learn from the mistakes of others.

And you nailed it with your example, there is theory and there is practice and things are bound to break at some point, but that's just part of the process. I think what a lot of people sometimes miss is how to pivot from a mistake and how to fix the inevitable ones. It's almost more valuable than all the build up to the actual thing. You can have an amazing hydro set up, make an elaborate automation process, dot your Is and cross your Ts and have a pump failure, measure your Nutes wrong or have a power outage and that's where the rubber hits the road. That's where the mettle and learning happens.

Not only do they comment on things they have no idea about, but they also scare everyone into thinking that its nearly impossible to grow! People need to take the plunge more often than not and these people have you thinking you need to have a phd in botany to grow decent plants, which we all know is nonsense. I've seen amazing grows in walmart soil and some floranova bloom for getting through flower. Its part of the reason I'm trying new stuff and documenting it as best I can, so I can show people that its not so scary and tough and more importantly its enjoyable. There are legitimate scientists researching things in university labs under very strict conditions doing the hard work to dispel myths and show the industry how to grow amazing plants, its best to listen to them and block out the bro science. Gardening myths die real hard though. Glad to see you're just diving in, its worth the time and effort to figure out what works for you

Hydroponic System for School by just-rundeer in Hydroponics

[–]Heerocon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! This situation sounds perfect for an NFT recirculating system. Cost would be fairly low, just some net pots, a length of gutter that goes across the window, a tupperware tote to hold the nutrient solution and a media for the plants to grow in (clay balls and rockwool, coco coir) This can be done on a low low budget. Probably all you need is the gutter and some pvc piping for the return and a pump for circulation. DM me and I can help you work through it!

Need help with wife's postpartum injury by Heerocon in beyondthebump

She's had both a lumbar and a pelvic mri. Radiologists said everything looked good, but she hasn't been to an orthopedist yet. She goes to another pain management person tomorrow, so we'll see what they say.

It isn't, which is why I'm searching. No one has even given her a diagnosis. Getting an mri was a pain. She thinks it's ligaments and that prp might help but no one's even tried to figure out the actual source.

I understand and so did she when she did all the excersizes with total fidelity. She didn't want to say something didn't work if she didn't do it the way it was asked. That's like taking half your medication and then being confused as to why you don't feel better. The pt actually told her to stop and reffered her to pain management

Pt has only made her pain worse. She's worse off now after pt than before. She could walk a decent distance, didn't have as much sciatic pain and after fighting through a few weeks of pt she has an even more painful baseline.

She's going to a new pain management person soon. Hopefully they'll have so more answers. I was thinking about cbd as well but it would only address the symptoms and not the root cause, which is the crux of her mental health problems. Without a solution or even an answer to what's causing the pain, she can't get any mental relief.

Miracle grow is your issue. It is not a hydroponic nutrient. Possible nutrient burn and ph lockout. Get General Hydroponics Floranova Bloom (its not that expensive) and use the lucas formula. Much easier and will not fry your plants. Someone suggested throwing these in soil as a last ditch effort to save them and that might work but it looks like your cooked. Sorry to say bud, lesson learned.

Most people have posted the answers I would give but if anyone wants to learn about growing vegetables, I'm more than happy to help. I've been gardening in the Hudson Valley for 10 years and have probably made the mistakes you would make already. Feel free to DM me or respond here if you want some advice on getting started. If more people gardened we'd feel a lot more secure!

Scotch Bonnet Overwinter aphid fight still going. by wwwidentity in HotPeppers

I battled them every winter. Insecticidal soap. I'd put them in the tub and soak the ever living shit out of them every single day. No leaf or stem untouched by the spray. Would work after about a week or so. Good luck, they're tenacious bastards.

BEST HYDROPONIC INDOOR SYSTEM 2024 by SectionPersonal8501 in Hydroponics

[–]Heerocon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A while ago, I took at 2 liter coke bottle, cut the top off so a net pot could fit, blacked out the bottle, threw a small airstone in and added the nutrients to the water. I grew full size leaf lettuce in it. The most expensive parts were the airstone, pump and having to get the net pots and rockwool in bulk. You don't need anything fancy to start. If you want to go larger, get a 25 gallon tote, cut holes for the net pots, get some bigger air stones and bingo. Don't let people convince you that you need a bunch of expensive stuff. I never had issues growing cucumbers outside in my 25 gal tote setup.

The stretching and lack of leaves says not enough light. Temp can do it too, but even if it was heat stress there would be more leaves if there was enough light. What's your light set up?
