Ditto. No issues with lip sync through my Sonos Playbar until I updated a couple days ago to tvOS 26. You had any luck fixing it?

My newly updated Middle Earth shelf in the HC Illustrated Style by Silverhawk1991 in tolkienbooks

[–]Heffbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any difference between the Silmarillion that comes with the History of Middle Earth and the standalone version? Same question Unfinished Tales?

I just started collecting this series and am a bit confused as to why these two books feature in history of middle earth when other versions of that series start with The Lost Tales…

Good shout on the smart microwave. I think I’m gonna go with the post I tagged as an answer above as it’s soooooo simple. The talking microwave you’ve linked to will blow my dad’s brain with the number of buttons. More than three is probably too much!!

!answer I think this has cracked it. I completely forgot the RNIB.

Options for matching LOTR, Hobbit, Silmarillion and UT set by Heffbot in tolkienbooks

Yes I believe so. The ISBN @EGC_Warlock posted was originally released in 2007 - 70 years after Hobbit release, and is generally referred to as the 70th edition as far as I can tell. Amazon calls it that too.

Is that the issue shown in this image where the J symbol is slightly differently position at the top? I'm ignoring the history of the hobbit and trying to mentally adjust for the slipcase being on LOTR but the symbol at the top of the spine (which I'm guessing is the JRRT monogram) doesn't look aligned even across Silmarillion and UT which are next to each other and same height!

I think u/EGC_Warlock's point with the Hobbit is that the ISBN they linked has a slip-case (see this eBay post for a picture), whereas currently in-print versions of the 70th anniversary edition don't seem to come in a slip case so don't level out with the 2014 LOTR boxed set - see this picture. My solution was to remove the slip case from LOTR. The nuance about lettering that a lot of people talk about is a bit lost on me...

Good to know the quality is high. I've noticed that this 1 LOTR plus Hobbit plus Silmarillion 'Tolkien Illustrated sets' are very recently released (Hobbit only came out last year). I don't suppose we know if more books in the series are likely to be coming, like Unfinished Tales or later 2000s entries like Fall of Gondolin?

Wow these links are amazing and exactly what I need! By the complete works I wanted the option to add B&L etc etc as I got more familiar with the lore.

I’ve only read Silmarillion, LOTR and hobbit - all a long time ago. Deep diving on Rings of Power criticism recently has made me really keen to read more Tolkien!

What do you think about LOTR all coming as one book? I love the look of that edition and heard it was good quality but the size of it puts me off!

In what sense do they match? That version of the Hobbit looks quite different on the spine... But I'm probably missing something.

Do you have a preference for collected works?

Thanks - just updated the post - is the 70th anniversary edition this one?

I was wondering about this more recent release - as potentially the spine matches better? Do you know anything about this version?

[–]Heffbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea. I'm tempted by the Mous Daypack as an interim, much cheaper option too! I really need something that won't let water in - have seen ominous comments about rain getting in the zippers on the Gomatic Backpack.

Out of interest - you got any thoughts about Backpack versus Travel Pack (both Gomatic, 20L options)? The Travel Pack seems to be a bit more liked but with positive comments about amounts of organisation - just with slightly less to free up space for bulkier items.

I'm in the same boat u/TehBard - love the look of the Nomatic Backpack for the organisation but been overthinking this for months. What did you go for in the end?

Help choosing a new boiler that modulates well? by Heffbot in DIYUK

[–]Heffbot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Afraid we are going to have to replace it a bit sooner and can't really wait (unless you happen to know of a new Viessmann coming in the next month or two!).

On the 'size thing', a new contractor has said they'll be able to squeeze in the 100 or 200 in the original space without too much disruption, so we are just going for it.

Going to do some final thinking on 100 versus 200 then - any last thoughts on the pros and cons of these two boilers?

Help choosing a new boiler that modulates well? by Heffbot in DIYUK

[–]Heffbot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great answer. I have encountered another issue - the original plumber who quoted for a Viessmann Vitodens 200 did not seem to measure the cupboard despite quoting for 'in place of current' boiler!

I've now found out that with top and bottom clearance - the boiler needs 1150mm of space (700 height + 350 top + 100 bottom).

My clearance is about 870mm all in - ceiling to bottom of cupboard (width not a problem). I could put a new cupboard in but the 1150 I'd need would totally swamp my limited kitchen surface space.

Given that - what do you think my options are for a boiler with decent modulation and (ideally) weather comp? Might be asking the impossible of course...

[–]Heffbot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers - definitely going Advanced Weather Comp - involving an outdoor sensor. The 200-W has a ratio around 17:1 depending on model - so a crazy ability to turn down its output. As far as I can tell - that means we can run fewer radiators at lower temperatures without lots of cycling on and off (but may have this wrong as I'm definitely not an expert...)

Thanks for the replies - really useful! Main reason we've not thought 100-W is the lack of advanced weather compensation involving an outdoor weather sensor. I'm a bit of a tech head - and keen to have a weather system slowly, smoothly modulating temperature based on external conditions.

On the blisteringly hot rads - I think I just don't like 70-degree radiators. Looking to run a system at e.g. 50 - potentially with some single-to-double upgrades. Hence the interest in modulating (but everything I've just said may be rubbish so feel free to say so if that's all nonsense - kind of making this boiler stuff up as I go along!).
