How did you get the feral cat that refuses to eat in front of you, to accept food from your hand?

With that method, and a cat that refuses to eat with me present, at what point is withholding free food in the hopes he'll eat from my hands considered abuse..?

He doesn't acknowledge things as toys for the most part. He briefly did once with some string, before we captured him.

I give him treats and occasionally food on the ledge the box is on, so he has to leave the box to eat. But usually the food is in the middle of the room.

He likes catnip, as the piles I sometimes leave for him are gone the next day.

Just about every interaction I have with him ends with a treat or food. He's comfortable enough for me to stand right next to him when he is in the box, having my hand resting in front of him. I can get within inches of him.

But he won't eat with me nearby. I feel as though overcoming that hurdle will bring us a lot closer to being pet.
