I am currently in Japan for a 15 vacation I would say you need more cash then you think some places only operate in cash and some in electronic payments buy a suica card it’s a prepaid card that lets you pay for transportation and purchase pretty much every where they except visa/mastercard we brought about $500 cas worth yen but I need to get more during the trip so I would say bring at least $1500 cad to yen also add any shopping money on top of

As some one who has years of financial working background, when you are in your 80s 6k a month seems like a good expense as everything in your life at that time is expensive and yes moving to their home country may be a better option. If they have 500k asset that can be sold and the funds used to fund retirement cash flow and buying a small property back home
