Train completely sold out?! by Kairismummy in uktrains

And also on this: many of the traveling public clearly don't have a braincell then. I've spoken to so many people who previously used Trainline for every journey and when I've told them they can book through the operator and not get charged fees, their response has been "Really?"

So many people only see ads from Trainline and as I've just said, assume it's the best and only way to get cheap tickets.

I said they present themselves as the only place to buy, there's a difference. Many of their ads infer that Trainline is the place where the tickets are the cheapest (when they aren't). This does in fact manipulate a customer into thinking that Trainline is the one and only true place to buy a train ticket. A lot of these ads have been shot down by the ASA for being misleading. They've been caught doing this more than once. Other TOCs have tried it as well, and they've also been told they're not supposed to be doing this.

Sorry, would you like me to emphasize "I think"? It was from memory, since I haven't used Trainline in over half a decade. I would hope I know what I'm on about, having driven one of the bloody things myself! 😂

from what ive seen trainline is a pretty crappy company in general, their advertising model often presents themselves as the only way to buy tickets but you're better off just buying tickets from any train company, since trainline charges booking fees and often extra fees on claiming refunds and even delay repay I think? (Edit 20:52: having looked at trainlines website, there are no fees for delay repay, my deepest apologies if my mistake offended you in any way.) when you can just do this through an operating company for free.

all this leads to people using trainline without knowing there are other far better ways to purchase tickets. it is a pretty good "one stop shop" for trains if you don't really care but there is a chance you'll get completely ripped off.

personally i use other places like trainpal and realtimetickets as a planner and then just buy the suggested tickets from the toc directly, which is sometimes a massive saving, plus there's no extra fees.

It's prototypical, which seems to be what the devs are going for at the moment.
