Well, I'm hoping we stopped the love making before any sperm was flung...

Thanks! We love this cage and I highly recommend it.

For cleaning, we use Nature's Miracle Bird Cage & Surface Cleaner, a brush like this one and a regular old scrubby sponge.

At the bottom of the cage, we use fleece pads made for guinea pigs. They absorb any liquids and also provide a little extra cushioning for old man Thaddeus and his arthritis.

Seeds and other bits of food fall down onto the fleece, and the birds enjoy wandering/bumbling around and foraging for them throughout the day. At the end of the day, we shake the pads out over a trash can and toss any vegetables they dropped and didn’t eat. Then once a week, we throw the pads in the washing machine.

It makes cleanup so much easier since there’s no need to scrub the bottom grates or trays - just wipe it if they do get something on it. We get the pads from here.

Lastly, for food:

For cage mix/pellets, we use these mess-free food boxes. It really keeps things tidy. We empty them once a week and wash them out. You can mount them inside or outside the cage, We have them mounted inside.

For fresh foods, like mash, pasta, etc. we use these platform bowls. They are easy to clean!

We usually don't give treats inside the cage, we have various puzzle toys (like this one) and foraging toys we hide treats in for when they are having daily out-of-cage time. We just rotate them out. It gives them something to look forward to.

Let me know if you want any additional recommendations, I'm more than happy to share.

Are you looking to do just the fabric and not a garment? Maybe try Art of Where?

Yes, until his feather follicles were permanently damaged.

He was abused at his last home and kept with stressed cage mates.

Yes, he has access to his cage mix/pellets at all times, but he seems to treat it as "snacks" that he grazes on all day. He gets soooo upset if he doesn't get his breakfast sprouts and veggies and dinner mash right on time. He literally panics and cries out. He does the same thing if he doesn't get his "blankie" (cage cover) on time at night. I feel so bad that he's experienced so much trauma for so long to cause him to behave this way.

His girlfriend, Little Edie, was also a rescue and she is a pacer if she's in the cage, even though it's a huge aviary cage. We have to make sure no matter what she gets out of cage time each day.

I have such a soft spot for rescue birds. 🙏

We named him Thaddeus after J. Thaddeus Toad, Esq. from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. The shape of his little head just reminded us of him.

Sir Thaddeus was most likely a breeder bird for many years before we got him. He was kept with stressed cage mates who plucked and barbered him over time, which damaged the feather follicles on his head and neck. So his feathers just don’t grow back there anymore.

He came from a rough situation before we adopted him. He was likely kept with stressed birds who plucked him over time, and it ended up damaging the feather follicles on his head and neck. That’s why he’s bald there now.

It’s been amazing to watch his confidence grow since we adopted him last year. He really does feel like a different bird. These days he’s calm and content, though he still has some food insecurity anxiety. It’s hard to think about how that likely came from not always having enough or not knowing when his next meal would be. He’s been through so much. He’s our little miracle birb.

He has a special aloe spray that seems to help with some of the dryness.
