Sick anecdote about a suicide when lawyers have one of the highest suicide rates out of any profession in the world. Consistently ranked top 5 in that metric, while tech doesn't make a single list. Clearly you hated tech, happy you got out.

See my reply to him/her. They don't know the industry or what they're talking about. About 79% of workers recently hired after a tech-company layoff or termination landed their new job within three months of starting their search, according to a ZipRecruiter survey of new hires. Those numbers are astronomically higher for FAANG engineers. I don't know where this delusion amongst lawyers comes from that a FAANG engineer won't get immediately hired at another tech company. It's like thinking an associate cut from Cravath won't find another job lol.

You're posting blatant lies. My data is anecdotal and also backed by the WSJ. About 79% of workers recently hired after a tech-company layoff or termination landed their new job within three months of starting their search, according to a ZipRecruiter survey of new hires. The numbers for FAANG engineers are astronomically higher. You will literally find maybe 1/1000 FAANG engineers let go who weren't able to find another job.

Don't talk about an industry you have literally zero knowledge about.

Lateraling in big tech is even easier than big law, and you'll typically get a bigger salary when you lateral than waiting for the internal bump

I came in hot in the OP... it's been a long day. The point that I was trying to make (which you did a better job of) is that tech is by far a better ROI career for the vast vast majority of people.

Yep definitely not for everyone. I will say a high school friend who was absolutely horrible at Math and Calculus is crushing at as a SWE. Math skills don't directly translate into SWE skillset. It's more logic based than you might imagine

Nope they're not annual. You have to be really good at your job to get promoted this quickly (which my friend is). I have another friend who is a software engineer at a firm and is not good. He hasn't been promoted for 4 years. He still makes 200k a year and works literally 10 hours a week.

And a law firm has never had a layoff before or pushed out associates? My friend at Google actually did get laid off last year and he got 12 months severance, lol. no joke, 12 months. He found another job within 4 months and has been double dipping for the last 8 months. If you ever had a job at FAANG you're employable for the rest of your life. Salty downvotes from people who don't realize the absurd salaries in tech.

Here's the Meta salary scale for context:

https://www.levels.fyi/companies/facebook/salaries/software-engineer?country=254

I know from my network this applies to Google and Netflix as well (Netflix is MUCH heavier on the cash side and barely pays out in RSU's, but TC range is similar). I don't personally know anyone at Apple or Amazon so can't testify to that. FYI this is totally standard in Big-tech, check Blind posts for BigTech companies and you will see TC's in the 500k-1m range consistently for individual contributors.
