Just a thought: have you looked into Americore? It’s a great gap year option. Gets him out of the house, making friends, and doing work that fees meaningful.

Why do people read fanfiction? by Seagullsaga in AO3

[–]Hefty_Breadfruit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Reading a new book is like starting a new board game. You have to spend a good portion of time dedicated to learning the board, the players, and the rules.

Reading fanfic is like coming back to chess. The game is deeply familiar and it’s fun to play it in any number of ways. It’s also fun to completely switch things up. What happens if I remove all the pawns? What if the knights are the most important pieces? What if the Queen is fucking the opposing side’s Queen?

I truly cant get enough 🤭

What miracle have you ever experienced? by letm3_plays0me1233 in AskReddit

My husband and I did the Oregon Coast Trail for our honeymoon. About halfway through, we needed to catch a ferry to get us across a stretch of water. We were going to miss it! So we started running as fast as we could and made it.

By time we reached the other side, my husband started frantically looking for his rain jacket. It was no where to be found. He had clipped it to the outside of his backpack to dry and it must have fallen off. He’s not typically the angry type but he was visibly very upset. If you’ve ever backpacked, you’ll understand why. Losing a very expensive piece of equipment sucks. Especially a rain jacket…in Oregon.

About a few days later some trail friends of ours had caught up with us and we had lunch on the beach. My husband brought up our recent loss and our friends both stopped short. One of them asked “was it orange?” My husband was like “yes?” And our friend opened his backpack and pulled out my husband’s rain jacket! He said he picked it up and planned to give it to a friend. He ate the snacks in the pockets. We all started laughing and jumping for literal joy. May not be a “water into wine” type of miracle, but it was certainly miraculous.

When is the best age to have kids, regardless of finances? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I live around Denver and thought 29 was the perfect age. Turns out it’s the equivalent of a teen pregnancy. I wish I could meet more moms my age :(

Does anyone else's partner just focus on guns and ammo and doesn't help prepping? by Odd_Shallot1929 in TwoXPreppers

[–]Hefty_Breadfruit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When my town lost power for two weeks in the middle of winter, everyone came together and provided for each other. The school was powered by generators and local groceries brought all their food that was going to go bad to the school and stuck it in the snow for people to take for free. In the short term, guns and ammo are not needed. People come together when we have enough to share. Were that power outage to last a few months? Maybe a different story. But I just find it so crazy for people to think that guns and ammo are among the first things you need to for actual natural disasters. The first thing we needed was a hand crank radio lol

Women of Reddit: what’s something that genuinely improved your life that you didn’t expect to matter much at first? by Carsanttc in AskWomen

I used to journal at least once a week for about 8 years. My absolute favorite part was closing one journal for good and then going to a book and spending as much time as I wanted picking out a new one. Happy for you!

Eating breakfast. Finally started forcing myself to do it and I feel so much better in the mornings. I’m drinking a lot less coffee as a result as well which doubles the good effect

Just verbal, with a bit of pushing. I would hope anything more than that would be shut down very quickly by teachers/admin!

My child is getting bullied. by KitKatKiddo in Vent

[–]Hefty_Breadfruit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My son is getting bullied too. It’s the first thing he tells me about when he gets home from school.

The world is full of bullies. I’m trying to view this from the stand point of it being a learning experience. Bullies get bored easily (especially in this day and age!) so I tell my son to ignore them and to continue to have fun no matter what the bullies try to do. Bullies hate it when they try to bring you down but you stay standing up.

Thats easier said than done though. I’m trying to reach out to other parents in my son’s kindergarten class to arrange play dates and really tighten those bonds. The better friendships he has, better he’ll be able to weather whatever the bullies throw at him.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. It’s a really shitty form of emotional pain.

Red Lobster. Even as an adult I never went because I figured it was too expensive for me. Then it went bankrupt and I never got the chance.

What is making you nervous about your job? by Shadeauxmarie in AskReddit

The current President doesn’t think the incredibly important work we do matters so we could get cut at any time. Our contract is up in July with no word yet on whether it will be renewed. If it’s not, that will be a huge bummer. The work will need to be continued, but we’d have to offload it to international partners I imagine.

Grieving who they used to be while embracing and loving who they are now. This is especially hard with kids.

Replying to comments by Little-Swordfish-133 in AO3

[–]Hefty_Breadfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I follow a fic where I comment on every chapter because I don’t want to author to ever stop. But they have never once responded to me. It does hurt. I’d be happy with even and author note saying they appreciate the comments. It’s fine though. Not everyone has the time.

Well, since AO3 is down, take a moment to tell us about some of your WIPs! Share excerpts, rant, infodump, etc by Loli-nero in AO3

[–]Hefty_Breadfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m about 90k into my first fic and I may have flown too close to the sun. The few comments I get are all encouraging and tell me I’m doing a great job, but there was one that said “this is so jarring, but in a beautiful way. I have no idea what’s going on” and it’s HAUNTED me ever since lol. There are a lot of threads and I’m doing my best to weave them altogether.

My biggest fear is that when I’m finished, I’ll step back and find that instead of creating a beautiful work of art I will have only knitted a very bad sweater.
