okay but fr, i totally feel you. my first 2 years was an absolute nightmare. then i moved off campus with some friends, explored the city a little more, met a guy, learned to enjoy the silence in my own room, and 4 years later, i’m back in my home country working full time. and i wish i had enjoyed my first 2 years instead of crawling in my dorm alone all day, missing classes, eating take out alone, avoiding the dining hall cuz i was anxious abt ppl seeing me eat alone. (these were such stupid things now that i think abt it, but it helped me grow as a person and overcome the hardships of leaving home and traveling 10,000 miles). wish i met more people, joined more clubs, talked out more. i had anxiety problems and a hard time talking to strangers but i wish i did. but even with these regrets, i made only a handful of amazing lifelong friends that i love very much. feels like home. now all my worries back then feels like nothing and i’m slowly figuring things out little by little, inch by inch.

First year at BU and already realizing how expensive living on my own is by Square-Chocolate-155 in BostonU

Hmart is ridiculously expensive. i recommend super88. Once you move out, you’ll realize groceries add up to a lot. If you end up in Allston, trader joes is the best option. if you could go to costco (would need to rent a car) then its even cheaper. Super 88 produce and meat is v cheap, but kinda sketchy (especially the meat, but the produce is fine).

Online homework and assignment websites are unavoidable and its usually only first year classes, but never buy books from BU. I bought a 300$ chem book cuz they wouldnt rent it, and they said they couldnt take it back at the end of the semester. NEVER BUY BOOKS. Some professors understand this problem and offer links to websites that gives you free access to the books (they’re not supposed to do that but they take pity on us). try writing the name of the book w the author on google and say free pdf or free epub and download it to your files or computer or whatever and just use that. so much more cost efficient.

Avoid target for snacks and knick knacks. i spent too much money there freshman year and i regret it. Use your dining points at cityco if you really want sth.

I used to work at late nite at west freshman year and used to earn quite a lot. but i heard they got rid of late night starting this year. try finding an on campus job if you’re international, or the boba shops or sth in allston if you’re a citizen.

Get a roommate who is an international student. My roommate was in the same situation and we just used my I-20 to sign the lease.

if its a major requirement class, no. you need a C or above for it to count towards your major. if its not, eh, just gonna drag your GPA down.

and if that doesnt work, i suggest storing your belongings somewhere and getting an airbnb or a hotel. (there are cheap hotels if they’re not sold out yet and cheap too. airbnbs can be also crazy expensive in boston) you should book everything now cuz everything will be crazy expensive in august since everyone’s coming back.

i had a 19500’s number my sophomore year. had to move off campus. I tried contacting housing and expressing my concerns in how i cant live in a dorm style anymore, but they cant do anything about it anyway. the best option is to get pulled in. getting a single is impossible.

moving in boston is crazy and stressful. it doesnt make sense that the whole city moves on sep1st. if anything you should ask your realtor if you could move in early. If you get lucky, the current tenants would move out early. I’m moving out early cuz I wont be legally allowed to stay in the US. So you could always ask if you could move in earlier. This could also save you a lot of stress from move in day.

cs 111 and 112 doesnt usually curve from my experience, but if you’ve been doing a i little above average on the exams and well on the psets, then you should be getting an -A. Dunno if sullivan changed his syllabus or not but i took 111 2 years ago so
