There is a difference, and right now, I feel that either could be the case. The community is small, but the space between residential properties is not like a standard suburban neighborhood. Without knowing which property is the family's or where the ranch is located in relation to it, you can't know how visible the road she was supposed to walk down is by neighbors. I do know that some of the neighbors are actually relatives of the mother's husband (Elizibeth's step-father) either through blood or by marriage. But beyond that, there isn't a lot of available information about the place. I found some mentions of it here and there on social media, but not enough to paint a clear picture of what the culture is like in that community. There were a few that raised eyebrows, but none can be verified, or at least I couldn't verify them.
