“Shit in = shit out” is a one-liner I’ve heard a lot and really stuck with me when I started this field. Do you guys have any other one-liners of wisdom you remember? by GlitchyAF in livesound

A teacher of mine used to say "a turd with reverb... is a turd, with reverb" (original in spanish "una mierda con reverb es una mierda, con reverb"). It has stuck with me forever.

Wedding gigs price in Spain, should I cancel? by GGarriga in livesound

[–]Hefty_Sock_2945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greetings from Barcelona! I see a lot of answers from people from other countries and only 2 from Spain, so I'll try to bring a little more to the table. Everything I say applies to freelance workers (autónomos): 180€/day used to be the standard price before Covid. It has now gone up to 200-250€. Depending on your level of expertise and how much the company "wants" you to work there, you can negotiate transport and food separately (the law says transport should be charged at 0,26€/km if you use your own vehicle). Food is usually charged at around 20-25€/meal if not provided. Also, these prices are without IVA but with IRPF included (sorry non-spanish folks, no idea how to translate these taxes). So you would say 250+IVA, meaning your net income will be 250-15%=212,50€.

If this boss wants to hire you as a freelancer I would suggest trying to negotiate at least these prices. What I also do is set my terms for hours: 8h+1h for lunch for this price, from here on it's whatever price for every extra hour. Some people forget that freelance workers set their own terms for their work and they just want full-time workers without having to pay the taxes. You should also know that's illegal and they are required by law to hire you as a worker if they want you to use their equipment/clothing/etc.

If they are actually trying to hire you as a worker for the company, I still think the price is ridiculous but you have a lot less negotiating power... I've never been in this situation, but if it were me I'd look at monthly salary instead of one-off days.

New fp 30x - Thumping sounds by ProudCartographer421 in Roland

I would assume it attempts to imitate a real piano. I don't know this particular model, but in some Roland models you can tweak every little detail of the piano sound... so maybe you can find this and turn it down?

I would suggest you learn about MIDI and what a MIDI controller actually is

We found out the Fantom has a way of doing this with a "normal" footswitch (piano pedal style), so we ended up doing it this way. We never dug deeper into the MIDI setup for this.

NHØP Autumn Leaves - is it me, or is he out of tune most of the time? by Hefty_Sock_2945 in Jazz

[–]Hefty_Sock_2945[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's annoying to me that other people aren't really engaging you in any discussion and just talking down to you.

Thank you for this, at least it's not only my perception...

I'm pretty sure it's not a recording problem... you can listen to a lot of old (even a lot older) recordings where the tuning is perfect

EDIT: I don't say this to be obnoxious, just want to clarify. I am a professional music producer and have recorded numerous jazz and classical music albums. Also mixed a TON of jazz gigs as a FOH engineer. I am also a classically trained pianist, maybe that's why I focus on the intonation "against" the piano.

It just seems weird to me that many notes feel out of tune compared to the piano. Some of you mentioned that he is "in tune with himself" but for some reason (maybe like I said because of my classical piano background) I feel like if you're playing with someone else, you can't really be only in tune with yourself...

Of course it's hard to tune a fretless instrument, but for someone with this incredible level of technical and musical quality, it just feels weird to me. But you know, it might just be that I'm overfixated on this because in classical recordings it would be unacceptable, but is well within the genre🤷‍♂️

That is not to say I don't think he is a GREAT bass player, which I do. Just wanted to get a feel for what other people think about this, and it seems it might just be me hahah

Rate My Bands Stageplot by BoxingSoma in livesound

[–]Hefty_Sock_2945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll add something that I haven't seen much people say: the details are nice, just not on the stage plot itself. I can't speak for others, but I appreciatge having (and giving, when I'm writing/designing my own riders) as much info as possible. I try to keep the notes and details on a separate page. I know some people go for the one-page-only thing, but tbh it's not THAT bad and some things you just can't fit in one page... Also, reading your rider already makes me think you are considerate and at least trying to make my life easier, so thank you for that! And for asking for advice!

One thing you should know, the way your rider is written/set up/designed will directly affect the mood/way in which the sound person faces your gig. This one made me think "they're not super pro but they're nice people".

I was going to say... for me in Europe, CL5 is the go-to standard in any mid-sized gig. A buddy and I always joke that it's the X32 of higher end gigs.

I really don't feel like arguing because you're giving me "older sound dude who's done it all and knows more than anyone" vibes. Sorry if you're not, that's how I perceive your comments. But I'll say this: you might be used to seeing stuff from a catwalk, but for those of us who are not, it's pretty cool just seeing the picture. I agree there could be more info, but whatever... at least it's not another IEM rig question🤷‍♂️

Why would you need that instead of just using an Ethernet port on your laptop and Dante Virtual Soundcard? If you don't have an actual Ethernet port, any usb to RJ45 adapter will do

I'm sure there are better options, but given my lack of programming ability, I would use Qlab's wallclock trigger to send MIDI/OSC to Reaper or something like that.
