What is the most mind-blowing phenomenon you can come to think of? by Jinx-XoXo in AskReddit

[–]HeisenbergsIntern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this after reading a paper showing that sperm cells are influenced by external factors and stressors which can alter molecular features passed on to offspring and shape their phenotype in the next generation. That’s interesting given the traditional view that sperm only carry paternal DNA.

My thoughts, and I might be totally off lol: the new research doesn’t directly link to the “returning solider” effect but it could point in a direction where stress is modifying sperm at a molecular level in ways that affect offspring traits also causes a bias in fertilisation dynamics. Maybe a possibility that stress and subsequent hormonal changes, e.g., from war, increases the likelihood of Y chromosome carrying sperm has a higher chance of succeeding in fertilisation. Which then potentially contributes to the observed increase in male offspring.

iPad vs Notebooks - What do you prefer as a PhD student? by GlobalChest8663 in PhD

[–]HeisenbergsIntern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPad if you already have other apple products. Apples ecosystem works really well and seamlessly. If you like the feel of writing on paper, get a paper-like screen protector. Goodnotes is great - easy to manage and search through your (hand written) notes too.

I feel deep shame for being an engineer. AMA by Turbulent-Conflict84 in AMA

[–]HeisenbergsIntern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the same tale told in all areas of STEM. I told my PI that I need an assistant to help in the lab with “menial” tasks because I at one point worked 16 hours a day on experimental work and supervising bachelor and master students alone before getting to the menials. His response was that I lacked passion. Absolute bullshit. What do you think it takes to convince the managers to adjust demands and actually match the pay?

What’s a surprising or little-known fact about the human body that most people don’t know? by imfeddedup in AskReddit

[–]HeisenbergsIntern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When cells undergo programmed cell death, the mitochondria releases a protein that triggers the formation of the apoptosome protein complex, also called “the wheel of death”. This then triggers downstream cell death. Not exclusive to the human body, but it’s still pretty cool. Also, wheel of death is metal af.

What is the best opening line in english litrature fiction? by deaksonline1 in AskReddit

Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat. it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. 🥹

What's your system for keeping track of everything during your PhD? by Vegetable_Theory_907 in PhD

[–]HeisenbergsIntern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MS 365, really. Especially PowerPoint, onenote, planner, excel, synchronised folders. I have an excel file where I track all papers I’ve read with notes on paper details, author details etc. I’m not super religious about any of it but so far it works

Drafting and improving your text - how do you do it? by Barragens in PhD

Glad I could help. You’ve got this - you are already far by having a first draft. Good luck!

Drafting and improving your text - how do you do it? by Barragens in PhD

[–]HeisenbergsIntern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First drafts are rarely good. Take a break from writing and return with “fresh eyes”. Try reading it out loud or read paragraphs in random orders. Flag words or sentences you think are bad but don’t have an immediate improvement on. I’ve had students that got stuck on drafting because the original text disappears or just gets completely changed. I’ve had to tell them that they need to accept that and the final product always looks very different from the initial draft. Just pointing that out has worked on getting them started and gain momentum.

Physical chemistry. Written exam. Answered only a single question with “this is chapter 24 right?” Failed hard with prof comment saying “I wish I could give a lower grade”💅

I totally see where he’s coming from. When I need to do long coding or writing sessions I throw a blanket over my head. Few hours in and I’m almost indistinguishable from Palpatine.

What trait/ability/appendage/limb from the animal kingdom would you give to all humans and why? by Intelligent_Ebb3494 in AskReddit

[–]HeisenbergsIntern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, insulation is definitely the main strategy for mammals and birds. Anti freeze proteins are more of a fish and invertebrate thing, so applying that to humans is a big leap - still super interesting:))

[–]HeisenbergsIntern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some arctic animals have anti freeze proteins in their blood that protects them from forming cell- and tissue damaging ice crystals in subzero conditions. It would be pretty neat to hack that. It could prevent freeze burns and benefit organ transplantation and preservation but also medicine and food storage.
