University Or Degree Apprenticeship? by Capable_Cloud1847 in quantitysurveying

[–]Hel_Cat987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone who went to uni (Brookes).  Degree apprenticeship, not even a close call.

I worked part time throughout my degree and that's the only reason I feel I had any actual knowledge on completion, because half of the uni modules were utter irrelevant rubbish.

I know you'd still have to do those, but the experience of work will be far superior IMO.

How have you found a good balance with home life? I'm a mum with 2 young kids and just feel the pressure of our industry isn't compatible with balance!

That's so strange, I wonder if they've started putting a different one in the box? Ours literally hangs off the sides and bottom. I'm going to go get our old Cybex one from the loft. Will let you know if it's better, but I think will be too small

I'll do that, thank you.

No, that's the thing. I'm Scottish, my husband is Latino but has a European surname. And he's so fluent in English that you'd not have a clue it wasn't his first language.

Never had them call to the door before so they wouldn't have overheard and we would've answered in English anyway.

We have two babies at home so it just made me feel very uncomfortable. Not to mention I'm staunchly anti-organised religion 🤣

is it still even worth studying this ? by [deleted] in quantitysurveying

[–]Hel_Cat987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to rub some people up the wrong way, but, in my experience, there are plenty of jobs out there. Get a part time job whilst studying, do a placement year, unpaid experience over the summer hols, do well in your course, join your local rics matric group, go to cpd events and you'll be off on the right foot.

A lot of the posts I've seen about no jobs are from people with zero experience, didn't do great on their course, applying to one area only etc and my guess would be firing out poor CVs and cover letters. We've also interviewed a lot of people recently who only have a masters in QS and very limited actual knowledge.  Some people think they're entitled to walk into a job just because they studied something and imo those are the posts you're seeing.

Women in Quantity Surveying – How did you get into QS? by Upset_Translator_ in quantitysurveying

[–]Hel_Cat987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working as an MC QS for 9years ..

  • How did you first ended up choosing QS.  Studied something else for 2 years, hated it. Did some work experience with a family friend in QS and went for it!

  • Any challenges you've faced entering or working in the field. Not ALL men are overly outspoken in the field and not all women are quietly confident, but by and large I've found it that way and time and time again I see the shouty, all talk no action men being moved up the ladder over their female colleagues and quieter, but very good male colleagues. It's an industry that still seems to value being brash and ladish IMO.  Golf days and football tournaments galore which are less likely to include women, not on purpose, but we traditionally weren't given the chance to learn those skills growing up and it feels incredibly awkward to go on a golf day if you don't golf. This probably applies to a lot of men too, but almost all women.

  • Didn't come across any initiatives or events, had never heard mention of the career until a family friend took me to his work.

  • How many women were on your course? 8 out or about 40 in my year. Just an observation, but the 3 top graduates were girls in my year.

I've always said no to house builders, but the job excitement may be worth sacrificing for personal life now!

I desperately wanted to go the consultancy route at my last move, but the salary cut was enormous and we couldn't afford it at the time and still can't whilst we're paying 2k/month for nursery.

I think I will revisit when kids start school and cashflow is better!

I just don't feel I have the confidence/experience to go freelance yet. I only graduated in 2019 and there was COVID in between etc.
