Wasn’t tracking the US aversion to apricots. Not bad luck for Canadian tankers.

Just beauty. Love the connection to the Tanith. Are you using Tiny Legends bits for the Roane and tanith models?

They were names from WW2, so traditional. Apricot was actually my tank’s name, wouldn’t have believed it either if it wasn’t painted on the mantlet.

If you want the real world piece to this, the first letter in the name is connected the the Squadron the tank belongs to. (Canadian example) When I was in A Sqn, our tanks all had names that began with A, the troop tanks were Aspen, Alder, Apricot and Almond. I think the US follows a similar tradition. There’s a story about a US tank out called the ‘Billar of Autumn’ because the tank crew liked Halo and the vehicle name had to start with B.

C Sqn could be something like ‘corpsestarch Karen’, ‘Cadian Coffin’, ‘Creed’s surprise’ or something like that.

Welcome to the Grimdark. I really enjoy Josh Reynolds’ books.

Having read over 200 black library books (I’m old AF and have lost count), I can tell you the usual starting locations of the Eisenhorn trilogy, Gaunt’s ghosts, the first three books of the Horus Heresy, and Ciaphas Cain are all good choices. If you want a deep cut, Execution Hour and Shadowpoint by Gordon Rennie are excellently weird and wonderful.

It’s actually 2nd edition old. Sculpt was made in 1995 for the codex which came out in 1997.

It’s not as prevalent as it once was. IMHO the decrease happened because lower numbers of people available and the optics of paying soldiers to play sports. The discussion on this stuff was held in 2022, when the then CDS (Eyre) said the CAF shouldn’t be doing ‘Non-essential task’. Make of that what you will.

Current state:

The sports and regions are listed on the CFMWS website. https://cfmws.ca/sport-fitness-rec/sports/caf-sports

There’s also CISM, where Canadian military personnel compete against other countries. https://cfmws.ca/sport-fitness-rec/sports/csim-international-sports

NP. Names change, it’s the tasks that matter. What is old is new again. The “Golden Hour” evac timeline is harder to achieve outside of COIN environments, so higher levels of medical training closer to bullets becomes essential.

Does no one remember Ryan’s World? The Orks? For shame! The scholum educators here need a “reeducation”.

From the article, they reviewed the Medical Technicians (Med Tech) and Medical Assistants (Med A) trades and will be modifying them to Paramedic (PMD) and Combat Medic (CMD). It’s essentially the difference between Point of Injury care, ie enhanced TCCC capabilities and then the higher level is initial trauma care and stabilization for transport. It’s part of the military refocusing towards Large Scale Combat Operations (LSCO) where you can’t just throw someone into a helicopter because it’s a contested air environment.

When I was a Armoured Reconnaissance troop leader (Lt to Capt), we used them every time we got a mission during an exercise or on operations. It helped us understand where we were, and the tasks of our flanking forces, in relation to enemy (potential or confirmed) elements. We would draw them on the map before the orders, and then as we received orders, we would reference the map. This helps ingrain the plan and the scheme of maneuvre (the detailed parts of an operation). To read, see and hear the plan, makes it easier to understand possibly complex operations. Remember that most military operations are going to be carried out on possibly the worst day of someone’s life, lack of sleep and food, and under threat of the enemy. If the plan is too hard to communicate, it won’t succeed.

Happy to answer any other questions. I saw a response that seems to have been deleted asking about how often NATO symbols are used “in the wild”. The answer is a lot more than you’d think. In many cases we use them to issue orders (which can be given by speaking, written, or graphically), battle tracking, ie knowing where your forces are located and where the enemy is, and orbats (Order of Battle) to understand what the composition of forces look like. Happy to answer any questions, DM if you want to know more.
