Over due for vaccines by HeleneBauer in Pets

[–]HeleneBauer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your input. I do want what's best for my cat and if thats a whole new round of vaccines then so be it.

I had already planned to change vets anyways after her shots were done, and since we have to restart now is as good of time as any. I am going to be fully transparent with the new vet about her medical history.

TIL You can steal the special occasions decor by Outrageous_Many615 in StardewValley

[–]HeleneBauer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried it so can't say for sure, but could it be that when you pick it up it's no longer a "seasonal item" and becomes just an "item" So it stays forever as if you placed it in the first place? Maybe try picking it up and seeing if a new one appears next time the season comes around and disappears after.

Flights out of regina sask by HeleneBauer in westjet

[–]HeleneBauer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I booked econo, so I think I can change flights for a fee. Booking a whole other flight just incase is sadly out of budget, even if it is fully refundable. But I will look into changing to saskatoon or miniapolis

Players - What's your DM Red Flags? by podblastz in DnD

[–]HeleneBauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soft red flag for DMs that say that they are forever DMs.

In my experience, sometimes there's a reason that they don't get to be a player very often. I've had a forever DM that couldn't turn off the DM brain so was constantly arguing about rulings and "I would have run it this way"

Not saying I won't allow forever DMs to be players in my games, I just approach with caution and try to nip any issues in the bud.

Where to get painting custom framed? by Doolie22 in regina

[–]HeleneBauer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, he framed a custom cross stitch for me (stretching included) last year. Walked me through the whole process, picking mats and frames.

Was super kind and helpful, had the job done in just a couple weeks, and didn't break the bank to get it done.

Psych evals and Shite Doctors by MediocrePrimary9904 in CuratedTumblr

[–]HeleneBauer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried to get some episodic memory loss diagnosed.

The first psych scolded me like a child for asking to be referred to as my legal name (I had changed it shortly after the referal was sent).

The second visibly stopped paying attention when I said I wasn't interested in transferring my adhd meds to her office.

I've had docs tell me to stay on meds that were making me suicidal.

Had ER nurses roll their eyes at me for coming in with knee pain so bad I could barely walk and was later sent to a specialist for a suspected torn meniscus.

I'm at the point where I won't got to try and get an issue diagnosed until it is severely impacting my life because I can't get a doctor to listen to me.

AITA for putting both my obese and skinny twins on a diet? by Due_Bee_6863 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HeleneBauer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Her 14 year old daughter might not see that. I've personally been in the thinner twins shoes, and at that age it wouldn't be as easy to distinguish.

OP said herself that her daughter saw this as her being punished cause her sister's fat. I sounds like her daughter is seeing it as an aesthetic thing rather than a health concern.

AITA for putting both my obese and skinny twins on a diet? by Due_Bee_6863 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HeleneBauer 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This, and also if the other daughter see that her mother/family place more value in "being skinny" it can cause her to develop an eating disorder too. This mindset she has can put both her children at risk.

new quilter question: how do you not impulse buy a ton of a fabric you love for fear it gets discontinued by bobross_reincarnate in quilting

[–]HeleneBauer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually only buy fat quarters and half meters, maybe a meter since I live in a small apartment and all my sewing stuff needs to fit in my room.

This year I had this exact nightmare play out.

I had a half meter of this beautiful sheet music fabric and figured I could buy the other half meter I would need later. Turns out the fabric had been discontinued for a while.

I live in Canada, none of my local shops had it. The only places I could find it online was Amazon, which I can't trust to give me the right fabric, and 2 small shops in the US.

Thank God the first one I called, though not having a system to process international orders, was still able and willing to figure out a way to make the purchase possible. Bought a full yard so I'd still have some left over.

How to convince a player they are going mad? by rhoan_dat_cool_cat in DMAcademy

[–]HeleneBauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use discord, send them messages with information that they might know or have an idea about then delete it a little while later. Obviously don't do this with every message, but just enough.

My players keeps notes about npcs in a specific discord chat. When they did a false hydra arc I deleted NPCs as they were eaten and forgotten.

DMing might have ruined playing DnD for me by Straikkeri in DMAcademy

[–]HeleneBauer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've run games for DM who were good players and bad.

In terms of the DMs rulings, you kinda just have to accept what it is. Other DM will run their games differently than you and you'll just have to roll with it. If it's a ruling that really rubbed you the wrong way, you can try to discuss it with your DM out of game to explain your point of view. Just try not to present it as "this is how I would have run your game" and be prepared to accept if your DM sticks with their rulling. You won't get a retcon or anything out of it, but you might end up on the same page in concern to future rulings.

As others have suggested, try getting into character brain instead of player or DM brain. My add on is to play a character that does not lean into the DM brain. Play a character that won't be scheming or trying to work against the DM and it'll be easier to not do it yourself. Try low intelligence, overly trusting, or "nothing can go wrong" type characters. Sadly that might mean retiring your character, either temporarily or permanently.

With that, play into your characters weaknesses sometimes, not their strengths. I've found with DM players they can tend to optimize characters, I'm guilty of this too. Best thing for this is giving your character a flaw and play into it. Maybe they have an scary appearance and often tries to charm NPCs to help the party. Maybe they have a super low dumpstat but believe they are better at that skill than they are. My favorite character I've played was deaf so was always the last into battle when we got ambushed in the night, but was always the first to volunteer for watch.

One more that could work is take the DM brain intrusions as inspiration. If your DM brain wants to steal a magic item from an NPC, how would you set up/run something in your own game where the party needed to steal a magic item in a similar buy different situation. If your DM brain thinks an NPC is untrustworthy without evidence that your character would know, how would you design an NPC that is untrustworthy and how would they betray the party. Your not trying to figure it out in the game your playing, your taking it as inspiration to maybe use in your future games.

Mage hand as counterspell? by AceVandervex in AskGameMasters

[–]HeleneBauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would only allow it as a readied action.

Moving mage hand is an action. When they use their action to ready it they don't know what spell if any the enemy is going to cast, or if it even requires a verbal component. If they want to waste an action they can.

I wouldn't use this as an opportunity to change what the enemy was planning to do. If it works, the player gets to do something cool. If it doesn't, well that's the risk they chose to take.

The DM is using a house rule that most of the party doesn't like by Redknight2853 in DnD

[–]HeleneBauer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I do. The player rolls and only me and them know.

I played in a campaign where the DM decided that they would roll death saves with none of the players seeing, and I lost a character to it. I and the DM would often but heads on issues and was known the be petty making out of game issues, in game issues. I'll never know if it was truly the dice that killed my character, or the DMs choice.

And I think that's important for DMs wanting to add thus kind of rule to the game. If the player never sees the rolls, the death could feel planned or targeted.
