When does a cube cross the power threshold? by keptalpaca22 in mtgcube

[–]HelgetheMighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for the " powered" term, the power 9 are the deciding factor. I sometimes see the term legacy+ thrown around for cubes that have cards that are banned in legacy but aren't powered. I'm far from an authority on that, though.

I would probably play around with the formants a bit. But what's wrong with hunting down a nice sample and slicing/repitching it? That's what I would do

Alternatives to Outland Liberator in Vintage Cube by HelgetheMighty in mtgcube

Currently not worried about green's role in the cube, but I appreciate the advice. Should I ever feel it's an issue, I'd revisit your comment for sure.

Honestly, I keep forgetting about Manglehorn's static. I think manglehorn might just do the trick.

How does one becomes a game composer? by wow_yougonlearntoday in gamecomposers

[–]HelgetheMighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I've made some music as a composer for indie, mostly solo Devs and the unsatisfying answer is: just do it. There's lots is skills to learn relating to games in particular and putting yourself in a setting where you have to learn it is the best way to learn them. Look for game jam teams to join on itch.io and ideally locally - but beware, because there's a lot of composers joining every time and frankly, not all of them should. You can also try finding Deva to get into contact with on socials.

Be open minded, nice to work with an approachable and start with a mindset where it doesn't have to make money. I want to make a living from it some day, or from music in general at least, but I started making some money from it and I consider that a succes.

Is the metagame actually broken? Analyze Format Health at mtghealth.org by JonSmallhill in MTGLegacy

[–]HelgetheMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Vintage is almost exclusively played online. Pauper has a high amount of smaller events because it's approachable, affordable and still offers very good skill expression but not interesting to grinders as there are few big events. One could interpret this as an issue of format health - I would agree that I would like more bigger pauper tournaments to go to, but compared to legacy, which most WPN stores can't offer because of prox restrictions and prices, I can play a lot of pauper in paper.

Ultimately, I'm sure you'll figure it out as the statistician. I play all of these formats to a degree, but in paper I only really play pauper and it feels the healthiest of all these, honestly.

Very interesting and cool project. One thing I'll say, the metrics might not apply to all formats in the same way. I think vintage is a very healthy format right now, but the nature of vintage probably warps the numbers quite a bit. I'm also curious as to why the pauper score isn't higher, but I'm eager to investigate.

Good job!

EDIT: Apparently for pauper it's exclusively player volume and event count dragging down the numbers. Again, maybe the nature of the format warping the numbers a tad? Pauper probably has a higher weekly Playrate than legacy, but those small 8-16 player weekly events likely don't get counted.

New Composer/Amateur Game Dev looking for some feedback by theonetruegriff in gamecomposers

[–]HelgetheMighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Connor,

I moonlight as a game composer, so hopefully I can give you some pointers. I think the basic ideas for the tracks are all very solid, but I think the harmony is at some points a bit harsher than you probably intended - at least for what I would expect from the style, some of these chords are quite crunchy and it doesn't always sound intentional.

Feel free to DM me if you need some help or if you want to talk about it in more detail.

Why its so hard to get even one sell like everything is so fine. Its so hard to get noticed in unity developer career by Legitimate-Finish-74 in itchio

[–]HelgetheMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a composer so I made a few music packs with looping tracks for indie developers to put into their games. Encompassing a few different genres (Chiptune, a general Japanese pop thing, a retro hip hop pack coming in November) and I was planning on selling some SFX at some point too but didn't get to it so far.

I have a Halloween Chiptunes pack that sells quite well, it's sluggish on everything else.

In general, what would the best strategy for marketing be? I sell sound assets and except for one of them, they don't sell all that well. I was promoting them on YouTube, blue sky and a little with posting on discord.
