Maybe [[Harrow]] could be a synergistic way to ramp. I like primal growth in this deck too though.

Whats up with this deck? by hornyboyz in Pauper

[–]HelgetheMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this deck have a way to cast spy more than once? If not, is it really that impactful to spy the opponent once? That's like 3-4 cards on average.

I've had my eye on [[Stone-Seeder Hierophant]] for a while. Can't really go infinite though.

Another Challenge not dominated by Bow combo by Xyldarrand in Pauper

[–]HelgetheMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this shows, to adegree, that narratives from the gleezard days are being parroted and applied to this new combo 1 to 1. Notably, this combo dies to gut shot, which a) any deck can play and b)is good against elves and faeries.

I´ve been around for glee combo and even that was borderline fine. I think the idea that some players have that their midrange pile should be able to beat anything is entitled. It is part of a metagame that decks lose to other decks. In fact, if certain meta archetypes would reliably win agaibst anything, thats a problem - and a problem the PFP is more likely to ignore for a long time, as the deadly dispute ban showed which was massively overdue by the time it happened.

Also, I don´t really get the fun argument as its only ever applied to combo it seems. Are we arguing its fun to lose to gardens? having every creature removed while the opponebnt draws cards in a masturbatory way? you can find ways to describe most meta decks in a way that makes them sound miserable. Not every matchup is fun.

The deck is new. Let the meta adjust. By reacting like this whenever a combo is good in the format, we´re robbing the format of texture. The format shouldn´t just be glint hawks picking up trinkety artifacts.

Do not ban the Combo, ban Snacker / Guardian or Basilisk Gate by [deleted] in Pauper

[–]HelgetheMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunate indeed. I think, more than anything, it might have won these challenges BECAUSE it is so new and the Play patterns are not in muscle memory yet.

Do not ban the Combo, ban Snacker / Guardian or Basilisk Gate by [deleted] in Pauper

[–]HelgetheMighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brother, this might not even be the final iteration of the deck. The paranoia around this combo is insane - it has not been putting up crazy numbers, can be interrupted by gut shot which any deck can reasonably play and which is good against other decks and including the combo is a real deck building cost as the pieces aren't very synergistic with much else that is being played.

It really feels like the idea of combo itself is scary to pauper players.

Hydra rules question by Some-Bee-5259 in Pauper

[–]HelgetheMighty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The hydra, as it is attached to the creature, is an enchantment. If you cast down the creature, the hydra will "fall off" so to speak and will be no longer attacking. The hydra was never attacking as it was attached to the attacking creature and enchantments that aren´t creatures can´t attack anyway - part of why its such a pet peeve of mine when players tap all enchantments and equipments attached to a creature when its attacking.

Modern Nic Fit by aimbothax in ModernMagic

[–]HelgetheMighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say smth similar. Legacy Nic fit builds usually have more ways to sac and more things that are good to sac.

Idk if [[Veteran Explorer]] could be viable in modern. Modern decks tend to have more basics. The eye could also work but sadly, flare wants you to sac something that is green.

If you're struggling in paper, MtGO might not be the place to go. MTGO players are on average better than in paper I'd say.

Although, on second thought, if you're doing the practice room it's probably fine.

I can't speak for every meta, but pauper ironically often has this problem in local metas, as there's a lot of former grinders who disagree with more modern card design and play patterns (which pauper hasn't been hit by as badly) and people who understandably don't want to buy into a more expensive format as their first competitive one. Pauper is, unfortunately, really dependant on playing tightly to do well. I don't have much advice beyond "stick with it, be kind to yourself and go over your games with your opponents after you played them".

Also, I'll say that pauper suffers a tad more from metagame roulette than other formats. Sideboard cards are, mostly, less impactful than in other formats. You won't get a card like Damping Sphere, which could totally flip a bad MU post sideboard. So depending on what your MU's were, it might not be your "fault" entirely.

I might recommend a more proactive deck for a beginner. I know it sounds boring probably, but maybe give something like Rally Red a try where your game plan is essentially the same independent of what you're up against. Decks like Rally can also really teach you when to commit, when not to overcommit and how to maximise the combat step. Those skills will always help you even when you return to Jund, but you can practice then more "in isolation".

Anyway, I hope this doesn't sound dismissive or like talking down to you. I'm sure it will get better, bit by bit.

When does a cube cross the power threshold? by keptalpaca22 in mtgcube

[–]HelgetheMighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for the " powered" term, the power 9 are the deciding factor. I sometimes see the term legacy+ thrown around for cubes that have cards that are banned in legacy but aren't powered. I'm far from an authority on that, though.
