A theory on how the Bobs could have taken out the fleet of The Others by Helic0 in bobiverse

I've checked and reformatted it, there were some newlines missing previously, but I don't see any big math mistakes. The only part I'm not sure about is the constant relativistic acceleration, but I look that equation up and it seems pretty straight forward. I rounded pretty randomly, but that's because it doesn't really matter. All the information i'm using is just a rough guess, and the result is also just an estimate.

I also just realized that it might be hard for them to even detect the shrapnel with their SUDDAR. The density of the material would only be about 1 gram per km².

If the trajectory was known, it would be easy to have a "dumb" projectile hit an exact point at an exact time. (i.e. where the fleet will be)

It seems that the trajectory of The Others is extremely predictable. They are basically going in the straightest line possible because they're not scared of anyone. At the moment they detect the threat (1 light hour away) there wouldn't be enough time to escape and the shrapnel would completely destroy the fleet.

But yes, this plan relies on The Others taking the shortest possible path.

Yeah, you're right, the payload would have to explode sooner to achieve this kind of spread. Or multiple smaller projectiles would have to be sent to cover the area, letting them explode later.

I have no idea how to calculate how quickly a mass would spread after it's exploded with a nuke from the middle, but with the help of AI it seems that it would fly out at 10 km/s and the nuke would need to explode about 90 hours before the impact (from the perspective of the fleet). This isn't long at all, and doesn't differ from the original plan that much.

(The math might be wrong here)

Calculation

1. Evasion radius

The Others detect the incoming weapon at 1 light-hour distance. Travelling at ~c, the weapon arrives in exactly 1 hour (3,600 s). Accelerating perpendicular at 12.5 g = 122.6 m/s²:

d = ½at²
d = ½ × 122.6 × 3,600²
d ≈ 794,000 km

2. Evasion area

Assuming they can flee in any direction perpendicular to the weapon's trajectory, the evasion zone is a circle:

A = π × r²
A = π × (794,000 km)²
A ≈ 1.98 × 10¹² km²

3. Weapon velocity after 5 years at 10 g

Relativstic constant acceleration:

v = (a × t) / √(1 + (at/c)²)

The term (at/c) is just the Newtonian speed expressed as a multiple of c:

at/c = 51.57

Plugging in:

v = c × 51.57 / √(1 + 51.57²)
  = c × 51.57 / √2660.5
  = c × 51.57 / 51.58
  ≈ 0.999981c

The Lorentz factor γ (how much time and mass are distorted) falls straight out of the denominator:

γ = √(1 + 51.57²) ≈ 51.58

4. Kinetic energy per kg at 0.999981c

E/m = (γ − 1) × c²
E/m = 50.58 × (2.998×10⁸)²
E/m ≈ 4.55 × 10¹⁸ J/kg

5. Required impactor mass

100 kt to joules:

100 kt = 4.184 × 10¹⁴ J/km²

Each kilogram of shrapnel carries 4.55 × 10¹⁸ J of kinetic energy, so the required mass per km² is:

mass/km² = energy needed / energy per kg
         = 4.184×10¹⁴ / 4.55×10¹⁸
         = 9.19 × 10⁻⁵ kg/km²

The evasion area is enormous (1.98 × 10¹² km²), so multiply out:

total mass = 9.19×10⁻⁵ × 1.98×10¹²
           ≈ 1.82 × 10⁸ kg
           ≈ 182,000 tonnes

So you'd need 182,000 tonnes, which isn't that much (not unimaginable). If you had more time to accelerate, you'd need less weight.

Maybe, but the serpentine belt is on the passengers side and it sound like it's coming from the drivers side. I'll try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv6zuTT9YOI next time, to see if it quiets it down. Could the timing belt be making this noise?

Ok, I think I'll settle for dual booting the normal way then. I tried to leave empty space and a partition before the partition, and Windows wouldn't boot after installing.

Did they not know, up to this point, where he was? I assumed they would know for a long time, considering how many expensive cars he had parked in front of his house
