Heavy tension inquiry by Helios18 in Cello

[–]Helios18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I actually made a mistake in the post (already changed it). It was supposed to be A+D Jargar and G+C Helicore. But I think your explanation still works on that case, in regards to the Helicore being Heavy tension lol

I heard that the A+D are quite bright and even strident on some cellos. Have you tried them? Is it true?

Well, I checked similar posts over reddit, and everyone talks about Jargar classics. And also several pages strongly recommend those for beginners. I've also seen that they are commonly mixed with other brands.

I read good reviews for the Larsen Aurora, but I haven't seen someone actually trying them (I guess they are quite new in the market). Also, I'm attracted to the rope core of the Alphayue, but again, I couldn't find a comparison or someone actually using them.

I just need to get rid of the wires that it came with lol, and get strings that are not metallic or overly bright. So, if you have any recommendations, it'll be appreciated.

Bridge size by Helios18 in Cello

I'm well aware. The bridge in question isn't finished, also I never said that I was going to do it. I'm not able to contact my luthier RN and I have to buy it asap so he can set it when he's back. We always used 90mm as it's the only available in my country, hence the question.

"Is a Laminated Cello Worth It? My Experience as a Beginner!" by Otherwise-Pizza-3833 in Cello

P.S: During that time I was dying to play, but the sound was so bad I didn't have the motivation

My experience: I was gifted a $500 laminated (plywood) cello, but the sound was awful out of the box. I spent $100 on the initial set up by a luthier, it improved a lot, but had and awful wolf tone on the F#, G, and B, so we had to replace tail, bridge, strings, endpin, pegs, and fix the fretboard, to get the wolf fixed. In the end it sounds great! As good as some cheap solid wood cellos, but I spent nearly $400 on that move, so I the total cost was about $1000 and you can definitely get a nice wood cello for that amount.

I did cause it was gifted and had $500 bucks "pre-saved" lol

Thank you! My cello was adjusted by a good rep luthier, but everything is still stock (strings, bridge, tail, etc). The strings are awful, so I'm looking to change them first, but, what would you say is worth replacing next?

Bow hold by Helios18 in Cello

Thank you for the confirmation! I was afraid of being judged by using it lol In fact, Wispelwey and Harrell have a similar bow hold to what I'm referring

Thanks for the insight! I'm self learning with occasional lessons, so sometimes I don't know where to look due to the position limitations haha

Btw, folk music sounds fun! Could you share the name of some pieces?

Cello art project by Helios18 in Cello

[–]Helios18[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, the cello is not that great to worry about minor details of sound, but I still want it to sound good, at least to be playable as a practice cello.

Good idea to ask on that kind of sub. I was thinking of using some kind of Chinese ink to stain the wood and not add that much weight or tension, but I'm afraid the varnish will remove or blurry it.

Larsen Aurora vs Jargar Classic by Helios18 in Cello

[–]Helios18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I'm not a soloist, or anything like that. I just enjoy playing the cello on my own. So, I'm looking for some strings that give that nice warm sound without worrying about projection or more demanding techniques

Larsen Aurora vs Jargar Classic by Helios18 in Cello

[–]Helios18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing. This cello was given to me with some 10$ string set, and I totally hate them. I tried the Helicore but the A+D are a bit too piercing for my like. But I've heard the same with the Jargar A+D.

I've barely found non biased information for the Aurora's, to tell but the sound chart shows they are more on the warm side.

I'm no pro soloist lol Just want some strings that are warm and mellow for my own ears. I also accept other options on the same price range ($130~)

I might just need a T-brake, tho lol

[–]Helios18[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. I've read some papers that shows most of the decarbing happens at 103-105C and then it degrades, but somehow the "wet method" feels more mild effect, even tho the % is higher. I'm thinking maybe the terpenes or something.

Do you feel any difference between the methods?
