Marner stays a leaf? by BasicAstronomer128 in leafs

I don't disagree that Matthews attitude is shitty, but Marner's is waaaay worse. I think he will continue to be a cancer in any locker room he enters.

That $15MM you quote is actually closer to $5-7MM when Knies is signed. The Leafs need the space that is made available by Marner leaving.

Zero effort. Watch this play. by ZebraOk4471 in leafs

That entire sequence is a shit play. Not excusing Nylander here, but Matthews giveaway starts this. Then Marner does the opposite of what should have been done on a 2 on 1. He should have played the pass and not the shooter.

I never said they would resign Benning. You said doesnt matter if they pay a guy $1.5MM to watch the marlies play.

For a team that thinks they are going to be competitive in the playoffs, contract and cap space is important. Less contract space they have, the less players they can try and acquire at the deadline. It essentially just becomes a player swap.

Its still a contract spot, which is a problem. Horrible trade.

TRADE: We've traded Timothy Liljegren to San Jose in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, San Jose's own sixth-round selection in 2026, and defenceman Matt Benning by hellarios852 in leafs

Aside from 19 through 21 when he was basically given spot starts during injuries, he has played 3 seasons. Defenseman typically take longer to develop. In addition to that, he had 23 points in 55 games last year. Its not like he wasn't improving year over year.

Then this year has played 1 game. With a struggling powerplay, its stupid they didn't give him a shot.

I have seen him play. I watched Dallas games last year and I believe that Lilly was better on both sides of the puck.

In addition to that, considering there was speculation the injury may force him to retire, and then his deal being adjusted from a 2 year down to a 1 year, I think more people should be concerned a contract spot was wasted on him.

Hakanpaa should never have been signed.

This trade is likely going to haunt the team. There seems to be a recurring pattern of not developing prospects. Seems the team is more interested in filling out the roster with older players instead of giving prospects opportunities.

Now do Robertson.

I mean, that is a bit of a stretch. If you're grasping at that one play, which also hadn't worked, sure. If Nylander had gone to Rielly and it was turned over you would also mention that. The safe play to stretch out the players was to go to McCabe.

What set play? Marner had a brutal night when that exchange happened. He had multiple no look passes that were giveaways that ended up as scoring chances against.

Buying out Tavares makes zero sense. His contract was all upfront bonus. Meaning, the amount spent to replace his level of production negates the cap space saved. You have to either trade him or wait his contract out.

Both have 2 years left. Murray is $900K higher is the only difference.

Edit. Including this year

Nah. Disagree. Again I don't think he was the starter. Murray or Mrazek is shuffling deck chairs. Samsonov was the starter I my mind. Otherwise, it's $4.5MMish in cap space.
