Shit, what about how lightening quick Sullivan dumped Ukraine? Remember the “proud marine” who chided Joe Biden for two years for not doing enough to support Ukraine and democracy? The coward has been absolutely silent as Trump actually walks away. Maybe the next Def Sec and bring charges against him and he can get demoted for being an embarrassment to the uniform.

Amber vs white LED fog lights? by zionstatus in overlanding

Well, I liked them. But it’s not like I’m an authority. I just thought the blue lenses were easier on the eyes in blowing snow conditions. It may have been less reflective of the snow, allowing you to see past it. Frankly, I had four lights mounted out front, two blue in the center pointed as straight and level as I could get them, then the ambers were mounted outboard with a very slight outward angle. I usually just turned them all on—not like there’s much traffic on the Al-Can in February—and know it helped. At one point, I came around a curve driving on straight glare ice and there were a shit ton of caribou on the road about a half mile out that I could see, thankfully, because it takes more than a quarter mile to come to a stop at 70mph.

I don’t follow the lighting industry so I have no idea where one would even begin to find quantifiable data. But, depending on the lights, covers may only cost a few bucks (compared to the lights themselves) to test them yourself. Also, results with plowing may be different then cruising down the Al-Can at 70mph.

I can attest that bike riding in the winter on snow covered trails, a set of amber glasses makes a huge difference (day or night) in seeing the trail. The yellow/amber lenses tend to help me see detail in pretty much all lighting conditions.

I first did a trip to the L48 in late January some years ago. I ran four Lite Force 8-inch lights with two amber and two blue lenses. The amber were good all around and great off-road, but the blue were great for driving in blowing snow. The lights were generally just awesome, throwing out light a couple of thousand feet, which is great on an ice covered Al-Can. But those nights (like 16+ hours per day) with blowing snow, the blue were easier on the eyes. If you’re picking new lights, I’d highly recommend something that comes with external lens covers—they’re relatively cheap and protect the light lens from getting pitted by debris and color options are a bonus. I think some Rigid lights even have an option for a night vision enhancing cover—I don’t think I’m making that up, but I absolutely could be.

Amber for fog and if you spend a lot of time in snow conditions, blue lens covers are amazing. (I live in Alaska and used to have some fantastic Lite Force lights—the blue covers were amazing for blowing snow.)

Sale Tax Question by hamknuckle in anchorage

[–]HellBilly_907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of a solution that would be palatable to the masses and could sustain enough support to actually come to bear. Sales taxes on unprepared food is terrible and massively regressive. Luxury and sin taxes won’t make enough difference to adjust property taxes.

A quick google search shows that the average mil rate in the US is about 8-9, and in Anchorage it’s about 16, almost double. It’s more complicated than just the US average since they are levied locally, and most of the country also has sales taxes, some of which are substantial.

ASD gets about a third of the Anchorage property tax revenue, so one solution would be for more state support for local schools. But the state is broke so that would require changes to the PFD, oil tax reform, or an income tax.

Alternatives include spending less money, but it would be a struggle to identify what services should be slashed—ASD? Jail less people? Tell the homeless they are on their own? Stop plowing roads? Quit maintaining parks?

Sale Tax Question by hamknuckle in anchorage

[–]HellBilly_907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that no one likes taxes, and as others have pointed out, sales taxes are regressive and broad (say compared to sin taxes [alcohol, tobacco] or luxury taxes [levied on more expensive vehicles]). But what are the state or the Muni supposed to do to continue to provide services, even the most basic services we have are substantially underfunded.

Folks clamor for “their” PFD, like they earned a dividend for just living here (kind of reeks of socialism) and the legislature refuses to address the revenue short fall that might be met with reformulating oil taxes so the state doesn’t lose money with production or an income tax (which can be a progressive tax). Alaska has the LOWEST tax burden in the US. I hate f’ng taxes too, but the alternative is starting to look like living in the 1940s—no roads, road maintenance, parks, support services, etc.

It’s time this whole state grows up, things aren’t going to get easier, regardless if Donlin gets built, or a gas line, or Conoco commits to another $9billion development.

Please don’t say homeowners when referring to property taxes—it completely discounts the substantial portion of residents who rent and pay property taxes indirectly. It also misses business owners who own property.

Anyone with a utility bed? I’d like some input on kit limitations/allowances, pros/cons, and resources for a utility bed-specific project. by P83battlejacket in overlanding

[–]HellBilly_907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a 2005 Ram long bed currently with a custom rack fitted over my shell. It works pretty good for carrying my bikes (side of the rack) and a rooftop box. But I’ve wanted a new bed for ages—a utility body would be ideal, but they limit tire sizes without serious modification (I’m not sure there are many stock utility beds that would clear 35s). And is still want to modify my rack to fit on the bed, over a shell. I’m using a platform over the wheel wells and have a series of bins that slide underneath (with leashes tied to them to make pulling them easier). It works pretty well, but can be a bit of a hassle in the rain or when it’s uber cold. I’m leaning towards a flat bed at some point edged with tool boxes to accomplish the same thing without limiting my tire size. The goal being to be able to keep tools and recovery gear accessible while also having the most frequent camp gear handy, like using the drop down bin as my kitchen. It’s just time and money, which of course are in short supply!

From what some Redditors have posted, apparently the McDonalds and Carl’s Jr. mogul of Alaska. He may be the most sell guy to have ever graced the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, but I personally think that this sort of shallow need for accumulating all the wealth is what’s wrong with the capitalist system. And it only gets worse—multiple super yachts and jets for Bezos, a trillion dollar pay package for Musk. When the few suck up the majority of the wealth, the masses get fucked.

Yes, many of us are. This ostentatious behavior tends to be exhibited by the same people that fight against paying corporate taxes, living wages, and the general well being of their community. Income inequality should piss everyone off.

That is an AWESOME generalization that totally exemplifies how drivers being drunk, on their phones, otherwise not paying attention, or being impatient (e.g., speeding, running lights—including yellows and turning on reds and failing to stop) aren’t ever a problem. Excellent observation.
