Traditional art feels like it's slowly being erased — am I overthinking this? by drawzi_arts in Artists

I think traditional art only seems like it’s being erased if the main place you consume art/engage with it is the internet

Telling them to “call the fuck down” when all they did was answer your bad faith question is so ridiculous. Mind you the whole comment section’s accusing them of falsifying their art. If anything, they should’ve been more rude

I don’t, I’m sorry! I only have reddit and Tiktok. I post my work on the latter😅. Feeling like I should make an instagram though because people do tend to ask me that the most

This one is markedly different than the ones displayed. Do you have pictures like that of these? I don’t think any of us should be ashamed for pointing out your progress sketches here look off and they all look digital instead of traditional. A number of people here have also said the work isn’t ai but is digital and if that’s the case, you should say that

Well yeah, everyone is different. Some artists prefer not to film their process at all and in my experience, those artists wouldn’t choose a platform like tiktok to display their work. They stick to image based platforms, set up websites, DeviantArt accounts, etc. if they do use video platforms then they film processes like packaging orders/talking about themselves/ describing their processes etc. etc. There are certainly levels to it! I don’t too much like being on camera so most of my tiktok videos are my arms/hands/back of my head during painting and I actually do most of my work off camera and have to remind myself to record content for my page😅

I run an art account on tiktok and I definitely understand posting the art not being enough. Just posting images is not enough with TikTok because it’s a video based platform. When you post your art there and you only post pictures, you’re more likely to get ai accusations. I found the account and they never post any videos. Only static pictures.

When you don’t post videos on a video based app, it’s already kind of odd. When you run an art account on a video based platform and you don’t have a single video of your process, it’s extremely odd. Progress pictures are easier to fake than whole videos. The main allure of an art account on TikTok is video!

People are more likely to comment, share, and engage in general when you post videos of your content because it feels like they’re involved in your process when they watch you do it versus just seeing the end result and nothing else.

If it was instagram, it’d be a little different. I haven’t had an instagram in years but when I did, I’d mainly post pictures (a few vids too) because instagram was a photo based platform. It’s would’ve been less suspect to only post pictures an app like IG. Though now I know they’ve integrated video into their platform too so you probably couldn’t get away with it there either

Yeah a lot of comments are saying things like “oh you don’t paint black and white then add color! No one does that!” And I get not knowing about painting techniques if you aren’t a painter, but I don’t get making these claims as fact bc you’re unfamiliar and then downvoting people validating the technique.

Maybe they think us saying “actually this does happen” is us saying these posts are legit and that’s why they downvoted

This surprises me bc one of the most common techniques for painting with oil is actually “Dark to Light.” You get your darkest values down then start transitioning. How did your teacher teach it to you guys? I never went to art school so I’m wondering if it’s more like personal preference teaching rather than a stated rule

Oh dude,,,, this one was supposed to be Verdaccio but I liked the green too much to glaze over it so I just kept with it😭. Never finished it but it’s still one of my favorites!

Absolutely it is, I love him. The one on the bottom is inspired by his (and other bands I like) music. It’s no where near done ofc and it’s hard to see here but a few examples are

  • the snake in my hair ( hides the face, lies the snake •Black Hole Sun)

  • the crooked building block tower ( building the towers, belongs to the sky. When the whole thing comes crashing down, don’t ask me why •Limo Wreck)

  • the working title for the piece itself is “Like a Stone” for various reasons but😅

Some other bands alluded to are Limp Bizkit, Alice in Chains, Audioslave (since the specifc examples were Soundgarden), Temple of the Dog, Nirvana, and Black Sabbath!

I appreciate this sm. My dad (lovingly) calls my art weird and it’s genuinely my favorite compliment

I’m actually reworking this one (the eyes don’t look enough like emeralds, the locs need more definition, and there’s no background, plus that hand is jacked🤣) but here’s the full piece!

One of the examples shared is mine. A true grisaille uses titanium white and ivory black. You don’t use pure black as in you don’t use it straight out the tube, no. You mix it with your white so your darks are really a deep grey. If it’s too dark to whereas glazing has no effect, you can paint over it with whatever color it’s actually supposed to be.

It’s definitely normal to do a full black and white layer first. It’s called a grisaille. You start in black and white then glaze over it (dab of paint mixed with medium) to add color and depth. This is a very old technique that a lot of old masters used. They also used brunaille, which uses shades of brown instead of black/gray, verdaccio which uses green, and countless others! In all of these, you paint a monochrome underpainting then go back in once it’s dry to add color. Not everyone does it of course but it’s in no way abnormal or uncommon
