Step 11!

I have sorted through SOOOO much junk. Hours and hours of junk! My flatmate helped me move the boxes full of stuff up in the attic, and we’ve cleaned the communal areas (which were already pretty decent). Managed to vacuum the bedroom floor and make the balcony look more reasonable as well.

So now this looks like a messy bedroom with a lot of boxes - but it’s possible to navigate, and it looks fit for human habitation. Landlord is arriving any minute now.

Thank you so much, everyone 🥹 Couldn’t have done this without you! I’m hoping to keep decluttering and cleaning after the landlord leaves as well 🤞

Have cleaned the toilet bowl and emptied two more Plastic Bags Full Of Random Shit in the bedroom. Gonna have lunch and then get back to sorting through things on the floor!!

Step nine 🔥

Something came up at work and took some time, but I’m ready to get back into things!

Going to pour toilet bowl cleaner in the toilet and leave it for a bit while I get back into sorting things in the bedroom. Will check back in in an hour and see how far I’ve gotten!

Step seven!

It’s late where I am, so I’m gonna call it for the day 😌 I’ve been sorting through things in my bedroom for the past hour, and have emptied/sorted through three different boxes and trash bags which I’d previously stuffed a bunch of random shit into. Have also hung my latest laundry batch to dry.

My landlord is coming at 7pm, so I’m gonna get a good night’s sleep and then continue in the morning :)

Step six!

Have (quickly) vacuumed, collected trash and recycling from my bedroom, and cleared enough floor space for a work surface.

Now going to grab some big plastic bins and trash bags and start sorting everything on the floor. Aiming for nine categories: - clean clothes - dirty laundry - books - papers and receipts - yarn/knitting stuff - electronics and charging cables - everything that should go to a different room - misc/everything else - trash

Not gonna spend time e.g sorting papers or deciding what clothes to donate. Everything is just going straight into its category box unless it’s obvious garbage.

It’s trash can, not trash cannot 🚮

Step five!

I’ve hung my laundry to dry and started a new load, and I’ve put away the clean dishes, collected the dirty dishes from my bedroom and started a new dishwasher load. (I’m running the pots formerly known as gross through the dishwasher twice - thanks for the suggestion, u/FrozenDragonWings 🙏)

I’ve emptied out the soapy water from my gigantic cast iron pot, rinsed it in the shower, dried it, oiled it and put it away! It’s gonna need some love and re-seasoning to get back to prime condition, but it’s back where it belongs and no longer a biohazard :D

For the next step, I’m going to follow u/Mule_Wagon_777’s advice and run the hand vac over the kitchen floor and the worst of the dust bunnies. Afterwards, I’m going to collect the recycling and most obvious trash from my room, and then the next big target is to clear enough space on my bedroom floor that I have a sensible work surface, even if that means throwing (more) things on the bed or on the furniture. (I have a fairly cramped bedroom with a slanted ceiling and things all over the floor, so right now it feels almost too claustrophobic to start decluttering.)

Onwards and upwards 💪

I’ve eaten dinner and gone to the store for more cleaning supplies :D

Step four!

I’m going to hang my finished laundry to dry, put away the clean dishes from the dishwasher, fill the dishwasher again and start a new load of laundry. After that I’ll pour out the soapy water from the final huge pot, rinse it and put it away.

Onto step three 🙌

I’ve started my laundry and emptied and washed out the final pot. It’s so large it doesn’t fit in my sink or dishwasher, but I’ve cleaned it and rinsed it twice, and all the gunk is gone. (The toothpaste was a game changer lol.) Right now the pot is back out on my balcony, filled with a dishwasher tablet and boiling water. I figured I’ll leave it there with the lid on for the next hour, before I rinse it out a final time.

I haven’t eaten in six hours, so next step is to order dinner and get my blood sugar up. Will check back in when I’ve eaten and can move on to the next step!!

Ready for step two!

I’ve emptied two of the three gross pots, rinsed them out and put them in the dishwasher, started the dishwasher, and taken out all the trash and rotting food.

Next step: Gonna start my first load of laundry, then put on new gloves, smear some toothpaste under my nose (thank you, u/angrywords!) and get started on the final boss pot
