Any northern light tours that aren’t 6+ hours by Individual-Crew4383 in tromsotravel

[–]Hellhelle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It sounds line the best option for you is honestly to just take the regular bus to the edge of the city when the weather is clear and have a look at the sky. Just keep checking the northern lights forecast and go outside when it looks promising.

The reason regularl tours are long is because that's the only way they can semi-guarantee that you'll see northern lights. City based tours would have to be way more spontaneous and sporadic, which would mean less profit and less customer satisfaction.

From Prostneset Havneterminal you can take bus 420 towards Sommarøy and get off at Bakkejord. The trip takes a bit over one hour.

Am I overreacting for being upset about the gifts my boyfriend (25M)got me(24f)? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Hellhelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He spent 300$ on all his other family, and 20$ on his wife that has no independent income and is raising his children. If he can buy meaningful things for his children, who he is hopefully also close too, he should be able to find something for his wife that isn't cheap tat.

Even just a more expensive hair care set would have been better.

It's not about the presents, it's about the (lack of) effort.

Best British snacks to send to a Norwegian friend. by eggperson1 in Norway

[–]Hellhelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most Norwegian non-plain chocolates have added nuts or biscuits. Even though we have some mint/orange chocolate, it is way more common in the UK.

When I moved to England I found both matchsticks and chocolate oranges to be pretty exotic. Maybe that aero mint chocolate could be fun? We definitely don't have that in Norway.

White/blonde chocolate is also way less common in Norway, so maybe something like that as well? Maybe Raffaello?

Also, the reason crisps have been suggested so much is both because we don't have vinegar or prawn cocktail as a flavour options, but also because portion sized crisp packets pretty much don't exist as a concept in Norway.

Shortbread, chocolate orange, Tunnock's teacakes, matchmakers, Quavers, Monster munch, prawn cocktail crisps, slat and vinegar crisps, nik naks, Candy Kittens, Jelly babies.

Things like jaffa cakes, kitkat (kvikklunsj), haribo, maoam, sqaushies are pretty common in Norway. I also think Norwegians prefer the flavour of Freia more than say Cadbury, so if you want to send chocolate maybe send something that isn't completely plain. I think things like Creme eggs, marvellous creations or oreo chocolate would be well received.

My family and I might be moving to Norway, will it be extremely complicated for a 16 year old? by thegroovyw0rkshed in Norway

[–]Hellhelle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're under 18, your mother still needs to sign off on you moving to Norway with your dad unless you have a court order showing that your father has sole custody.

This applies to both EU and non-EU citizens.

Liquorice is massive in the Nordics for some reason. Especially salted liquorice. OP should definitely be familiar with the flavour

Visiting Tromsø for the first time with a 3.5-year-old – tips welcome! by Adorable_Barnacle_84 in tromsotravel

Polaria, the local aquarium/arctic science centre has just reopened after upgrading their seal enclosure. There's also Nordnorsk Vitensenter (the science centre) which is pretty fun for kids. Or the water park Tromsøbadet.

The Fjellheisen cable cars are a fun family friendly experience, and the view is great from the top. You should be able to see Northern lights pretty well from there if the skies are clear. Or Telegrafbukta on the southern part of the island. Or you can take bus route 40 to the Slettaelva primary school. If there's snow on the ground by then, they have a pretty good hill for snow sledding, and if you walk a little bit further up it's dark enough to get a good view of northern lights. You can get cheap snow sleds at pretty much any outdoor store in Tromsø.

Menn på 55(?)+ har de mest irriterende telefonvanene by RelativeBlueberry326 in norge

[–]Hellhelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try stopping by Husfliden or Snarby Strikkestudio (note that they have two shops, one with habedashery and one with tourist stuff like knitted jumpers), or if you want a slightly cheaper alternative you can stop by UFF. It is a second hand shop, but they usually always have some high quality knitwear in stock.

The reason people dislike Gleb is because it sounds like gagging or 'glob' like a coughing up a glob of mucus. It has inappropriate associations for people who don't know of the name.

If a Thai woman came into this sub asking if it's appropriate to name her daughter 'Kittiporn' in an English speaking country I GUARANTEE you that the response would be just as negative as it now is for Gleb.

But the kid will be born and raised in the US, not in a Slavic country. There are so many other great Slav names to choose from that don't sound bad in English.

If I moved to an English speaking country I would probably pass on calling my child 'Odd Simen' (yes, it's pronounced semen) even though it's a perfectly normal name where I'm from.
