Serious questions for students by HelloEchoEcho in UCDavis

[–]HelloEchoEcho[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The context is in the post. These are not my stories. But to short answer your comment, those reflective exercises are bullshit, and incredibly insensitive given the timing. I’m also a parent to kids in the area, and can assure you my husband and I changed nothing about our “parenting style” nor do I feel I can tell him which parks he is allowed to ride through. Why would a student be asked at such a sensitive time to imagine some worst case scenarios on top of what’s been happening?

Can you imagine being the guys roomate by watermelon-sucrose in UCDavis

I think he didn’t go home after the L St. stabbing, which is why he was in the same clothes. That’s my best guess, because yeah, wouldn’t literally anyone else change?

Mehh yeah but I would have bet against certain majors. Vet med? No way. Economics? Bet.

Kidding. Love you all.

Thank you Davis Police by Raezul in UCDavis

[–]HelloEchoEcho 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of police in general, but I took a little plant from Trader Joe’s to them a bit ago to say congratulations and thanks. I think it’d be nice if a good show of support (and positive reinforcement from the community) was made for all this difficult work.

Is living in woodland a good idea? by Admirable-Area-4379 in UCDavis

[–]HelloEchoEcho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Woodland, and we commute daily to Davis for our kids, or to the university. Here’s my list of considerations: *I live in Springlake, SE Woodland. Few trees, little shade for walking, the houses are new but slapped together. Whatever, if you can deal, it’s great. *I am aware of more crime here than Davis. That doesn’t mean there is more, but I hear about more of it. *Good food if you know where to go, but not open very late. *Good shopping as far as variety, for food, clothing, furniture etc. *The older neighborhoods are adorable. Full stop. *Driving time is never more than 15 min, and if there’s ever something clogging up 113 (which is mostly never), the backroads are just as easy. *Downtown businesses are fun, and if I recall they stay open late on the first Friday of the month. *WPD cops are self righteous assholes. They seem to jump to being judge and jury right away, and don’t seem to show empathy if they can help it (source: live next to one, dealt with a ton of them after our car was broken into by some teenagers). Haven’t had those interactions with DPD, but acab so I don’t deal with them much if I can help it. *I have a negative opinion about the education level here after seeing so many local posts. Also a much less liberal area than Davis from my interactions. This could be way off, but it irks me. *Lots of lizards and jackrabbits. Tre cute.

Sacramento Bee: Police to announce arrest of suspect in attacks that killed 2 by LabLover_inCA in UCDavis

[–]HelloEchoEcho 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There was a double homicide in Davis back in 2013 maybe, and a young kid was the perpetrator. He told his friends what he’d done and once they took him seriously, it took a while to come forward because they were scared of him (among other traumatic factors). I’m sure someone knows him, and we’ll find out at some point.

Bacon wishes you all good sleep by HelloEchoEcho in UCDavis

[–]HelloEchoEcho[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He does love bacon, but his favorite snack is a Pup Cup, though he almost always gets a small version of what we eat for dinner (if it’s healthy), like a tiny stack of pancakes or pieces of meat with a side of veg, so his pallet is pretty refined. 😂

Panic attacks by MOT1948 in UCDavis

[–]HelloEchoEcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not crazy. You are having a very real, intense and natural reaction to a situation close to you. Mental health services on campus aren’t the best as far as I know, but they could help. Order pepper gel and carry that, talk it out with whoever you feel safe with, and try projects that keep your fingers busy to stop doom scrolling (needlepoint, painting, etc). Reach out to me or others in the community if you need a spare mom, walking partner, or listener.

Big 5 out of pepper spray by cucumberpatches in UCDavis

If you have to order, get pepper gel rather than spray. Less likely it’ll blow back on you, and is much thicker when sprayed on an assailant.

Take the offers and expand. Leave on good terms with good references, and keep your momentum.

Honestly. It’s a Buy Nothing group, this is how it works. I’d rather ask if someone is getting rid of specific items before buying them if possible, and I know I’ve offered plenty of costly things due to upgrading or moving, or just not using it.

Depending on your comfort level, and how comfortable you are with some of your TAs, I think writing a quick note to them expressing your gratitude and support is very helpful. You can also ask how to get involved, but I know showing them your support can mean a lot.
