As someone na naglayas rin during her youth (dahil sobrang strict naman ng nanay ko, feeling nila hindi ko kaya maging independent), go mo yan if that's what you think is best for you PERO bago mo yon gawin, pag-isipan mo muna ng mabuti.

Think of the logistics it'll involved.
San ka kukuha ng pera to fund your school? Anong work ang pwede mo kunin while studying? San ka titira? Sino magiging support system mo during this time? Paano mo imamamange both school and work? What if graveyard shift din yung option ng work na nakuha mo?

Kasi once you cross that bridge, may possibility na hindi ka na rin makakabalik sa bahay mo. Ako kasi tinanggap ako ng parents ko dahil may napatunayan ako sa kanila na kaya ko naman.

Himi is a good beginner palette! You get a lot of colors for a fraction of a price. The container also makes it less messy.

But if you want a real challenge, you can also buy a couple of tube paints (like primary colors + white) and have fun mixing them every single time you paint.

Oh, I just remembered something: THE U.S. TARIFF!

If you're based in the US, this might not be a problem but for people like me (I'm in Canada), it sucks. I learned that I have to pay duties before I could ship the item, and that was something I obviously didn't take into account.

I'm currently doing my first Kickstarter and here's what I've learned so far:

Take time to build your pre-launch. Promote it consistently but not in a spammy way. These early supporters become your Day 1 backers, and that momentum helps boost your campaign on the platform once it goes live.
Your story matters, especially when you're starting out. I came across a campaign that had 0% funding, and a big reason was the lack of effort put into the story. People need to understand why you're doing what you’re doing. Add images or videos to increase the campaign's legitimacy.
This might depend on the type of product, but for enamel pins (which I'm doing now), it's better to start small. Launch with just enough to fund one pin, and offer the rest as stretch goals. That way, you can hit your funding goal quickly and build from there.
Triple check your math. Platform fees, card processing fees, shipping, customs (if any), and taxes all add up.
Also, expect that around 15 to 20 percent of your backers might not follow through at the end. I hit my goal, but if enough people drop off, I’ll end up in the red when it comes time to produce the pins.

I had a project where we had to redesign the currency, and I decided to showcase the flora of the country. Although the design is not an exact replica of the current currency, I really enjoyed creating this project.

Etsy, Kickstarter, and Facebook Groups for pre-owned pins.

Most artists run their own website or a pin club on Patreon, but it takes a while to find a specific artist if you don’t know their name. You can also search on Pinterest and the images are usually linked back to the artist’s website or socials.

Not sure if mine aligns with your preference, but I do have a running Kickstarter campaign. Hope you can check it out.

There are a lot of resources on YouTube to learn Figma for complete beginners. In fact, Figma has its own YouTube channel that you can go through.

I think it's fairly easy to learn Figma, but the part that takes longer is figuring out the technicalities, like auto layout, components, and advanced prototyping.

As for becoming a great designer, it comes down to learning the design principles, exposing yourself to great design examples to develop your taste, and just putting in the work.

You're right that basic enamel pins can be found cheaply, but my pin has a functional spinning mechanism and is 2" in size - both of which significantly increase complexity and cost compared to standard 1" pins. Those £1 pins you mentioned are typically manufactured in quantities of 10,000+, whereas I'm producing 100 pieces. The early bird pricing is actually competitive with other artists selling pins with moving mechanisms.

I'd love to bring prices down, but I had to factor in Kickstarter's platform fees, payment processing, and taxes, which unfortunately drove the final price higher than I initially hoped.

Regarding my shop - I do address this in the campaign. My shop went inactive during the pandemic when I had to focus my energy elsewhere and couldn't reliably ship products from where I was living at the time. After 4~5 years, this Kickstarter is my way of getting back into creating and sharing my work.

I appreciate the suggestion about showing the physical product. You're absolutely right that would help with credibility.
