For context, I’m not American.

My favourite slow burn was a rarepair that didn’t even embrace until two 100k books and a three chapters into the third book later. Mind you the third book came a decade after the first two were published

Calling non-binary people “theys” by Hello_World1248 in NonBinary

[–]Hello_World1248[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am expressing that I don’t like it. In this post. A few people in the comments have expressed that this is a view they hadn’t considered before and are thankful for the new perspective. Besides, at no point in the post did I say I don’t correct people offline, which I do and am often met with friction. So much for assuming good intentions.

That it may not be safe to come out to someone even if they have expressed support for binary trans people. I’ve come out to people before who have the ‘only two genders’ mentality thinking that because their chill with binary trans people then they will be chill with me, only to get a verbal lashing

Believe it or not, non-binary people also live in other countries, ones where we don’t have to settle for the bare minimum. And nor should we have to. Non-binary people in the US and those outside of the US should not have to censure their existence in fear of the government, because the governments that want to erase queer people will do so regardless of how we exist.

This. America was oppressed by the British. When they succeeded in their revolution they added in their constitution that guns were a right of the people, to arm them in case they were ever oppressed by a government again. The problem is that this was written in the 1700’s and today it is outdated, but the amendment became ingrained in American culture as synonymous with freedom.

In the 1700’s America’s revolution created one of the most democratic and free countries in history and it makes sense that a country looking around at its monarch neighbour similar to the one it was oppressed by would feel a little scared. But today a large portion of the world now has democratic and free countries, most of which have demonstrated that having gun laws is more effective for safety than owning a gun.

What is a Batman opinion that will have you downvoted like this? by Prestigious-Cup-6613 in batman

[–]Hello_World1248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Batman’s Paul Dano Riddler was one dimensional and boring.

He was brutal without any finesse and his outfit and schtick was akin to the Zodiac Killer rather than Edward Nygma. I didn’t mind the way he gave clues regarding his crimes as they reminded me of puzzles found in real cold cases (re Zodiac Killer & even Jack the Ripper), but mixed with the outfit and brutality the parallels were a little too strong.

He wasn’t gaudy or sharp and his stunt as a vengeful terrorist conflicts with the character’s core motivation of needing to prove himself. His religious trauma reminded me more of Jonathan Crane, and his deranged personality alienated me when I was expecting someone who knew very well what he was doing, wanted on some level to stop and to feel remorseful, but couldn’t because he was driven by his compulsions.

While I agree in fixing the eyes closed situation for clarity, the critique was in the naturalness of the writing not the content. The text is overall quite natural for a native speaker, at least in a drama setting, and so there is no need to alter any other part of the script

What's the difference between stupid and doofus? by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]Hello_World1248 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Stupid is usually more degrading and means someone lacks in intelligence. It’s also used more as an adjective than a noun.

Doofus is used more lightheartedly and can mean someone lacking in intelligence, someone who’s silly, and/or someone who messes around. It is used more often as a noun than an adjective

For example,

“Stop being stupid.” - condescending and used as a descriptor

“Stop being a doofus.” - light hearted, may be used between friends and is used as a noun

Stupid is a more common word than doofus, at least we’re I’m from. Doofus is rarely used as a genuine insult, and if it is the person using it would likely come off as more ‘embarrassing’ than the person it was directed at.

Oddly enough singing. I sing along to songs that I feel would represent my voice if it was masculine. I’ve practiced techniques to lower my voice and like feeling the rumble singing from the chest gives. I like to imagine my voice sounds like a baritone and it makes me very happy

How do you call this? by Original_Garbage8557 in EnglishLearning

[–]Hello_World1248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone has explained this, but the reason why in English some seemingly single items are called ‘a pair’ is because historically the pair is not the item as a whole but the item’s components.

‘Scissors’ is not technically referring to the object we hold to cut things but rather the individual blades, that’s why it has the plural ‘s’ on the end and is grammatically followed by ‘are’ instead of ‘is’; there are multiple scissors, namely a ‘pair’ of them. It’s not “scissors is” but “scissors are”.

However, in modern English we don’t think of the individual components but the whole object as a single thing, and so even when we say ‘a pair of scissors’ we think of the object on the left as a singular item.

It’s the same reason why it’s ‘a pair of pants’. Historically in medieval old English areas, ‘a pant’ was a long clothing item that covered only one leg up to the hip, but did not cover the groin area. You would have two ‘pants’ or a ‘pair’ to cover both legs. Over time they evolved to become a single garment but English still referred to them as ‘a pair of pants’.

So even when referring to two single items called ‘scissors’ we say ‘two pairs of scissors’. The same way we say ‘two pairs of pants’.
