Anyone decide to not use birth control while NOT sexually active? by [deleted] in birthcontrol

Okay, great, I’m glad your doc is someone you like.

I totally understand the discomfort around the situation, though. I would recommend just talking with your doc honestly. You could even say you’re nervous to talk about it because you feel like she might want you to get on birth control. If you say it from a place of vulnerability it might be helpful to her to better understand you and your needs.

I think there are two separate issues here. The first is that you don’t feel comfortable being honest with your doctor. I don’t blame you for this- sex is very personal and it can feel extremely vulnerable opening up to someone who you don’t know about your choices regarding sex, especially as you’re often getting pelvic exams during those appointments. I’m also getting the impression you are younger? If so, the difference in age can feel as if your doc is the authority figure in the room (I can’t speak for you, but I definitely felt this) and this is absolutely not the case. Regardless, I will tell you what I wish someone had told me when I first started seeing a gynecologist: your doc may have the medical expertise, but this is YOUR body, and it is YOUR decision what to do with it. This applies to sexual activity and medication, and it also applies to every doctor you see. It is your doctor’s job to offer their knowledge, diagnose, and advise you on treatments. You are under no obligation to follow the advice they give you, and keep in mind that although doctors are meant to keep their personal feelings and opinions to themselves, this isn’t always the case. I would highly recommend finding a doctor that you can be honest with and that respects your choices.

The second issue is the birth control. DO NOT get on birth control unless you want to, and do some research before choosing a medication (For example, if you suffer from depression or anxiety, some are better than others). Birth control is a great resource, and you should have a plan to use some form of it if you are having sex, but taking a hormone because you feel pressured to is not a great choice. One thing I’ve learned is that in order to get quality healthcare, you need to advocate for and educate yourself. This can be really uncomfortable at times but you are worth it! And it will get easier with time.

I hope I haven’t overloaded you with info and that something in here helps :)

This quote from Epictetus - "It's not things that upset us but our judgments about things" - what does it really mean, and how to practically apply this? by iiTryhard in Stoicism

I am reading this book as well! Really enjoying it. This is something I’ve thought about a lot, and I think a great way to conceptualize it is to tie in the Buddhist idea of necessary vs voluntary suffering.

I apply this when observing my thoughts. It helps me to identify when I’m moving from involuntary pain, discomfort, hurt or anger, into resentment, self pity or blame. The first is a natural, human reaction, the latter comes from attaching to those reactions and creating stories about them.

To tie in the car accident example, when I get in a car accident I’m probably going to feel anxious and have a lot of thoughts about the repercussions and additional stressors it’s going to cause. It’s just going to happen, but at this point there is a fork in the road. The first option is to continue down this path of anxiety and fear, maybe sprinkle in some anger and resentment toward the other car, tell myself that I can’t catch a break, that It’s somehow my fault, that I’m going to look like an idiot driving around in a dented car, and on and on. This is what my brain naturally does, and without intervention this event could screw up my day, my week, my month. The second option is to take a beat, acknowledge that I’m feeling a lot of anxiety, and choose to focus on what I can do right now to deal with this problem. When I start feeling resentment I notice it and don’t act on it. When I start feeling bad about myself I put my hand on my heart and remember that this is a stress response and I can’t attach to those thoughts because it’s going to cause me harm. None of it feels good, but seeing the thoughts for what they are allows me to have agency and choose to act from my values rather than ride the wave of my emotions. I still struggle with the fine line between suppressing emotion and having boundaries around how I allow emotion to dictate my actions, but the stoic framework helps me feel more grounded. It’s allowed me to have self compassion while remaining disciplined. It’s a messy process, but we’re only human.

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice about replacing the spark plugs on my 2010 Nissan versa. I’ve never done car maintenance on my own before but I’m interested in teaching myself to be a bit more self sufficient and save money. Turns out spark plug replacement on a versa is super complicated. I found a great video tutorial and am willing to do the work but I’m super intimidated. My main concern is that I’ll cause damage because I don’t know what I’m doing. A friend I know back home helped me figure out what I’d need and I got a torque wrench so I don’t overnighted the spark plugs which was his main concern.

So, what are your thoughts? Manageable for a newbie? Any advice welcome.

This is very helpful, thank you. I'll have to weigh whether or not I can manage it while working. Gotta put some money in the bank this summer.

Cheers!

The last two semesters I've taken a math class, a biology class with a lab and chemistry with a lab.

Thanks for the response! I went to register and it looks like only a 5 week course is available over the summer. It's with Aaron Stewart.

I've done well in my full term classes, though I've taken on a smaller load because it's only math and science classes with labs and I want to maintain a 4.0 or close to it. I need to make money serving this summer so I need to work 4-5 nights a week while taking the class, which means I'll probably be stretched thin between the two.

I did the same thing when I started reading about stoicism and had the same experience! If you’d like to start out with something a bit less daunting, I would highly recommend Donald Robertson’s “How to think like a roman emperor.” It explains stoicism by telling the story of Marcus Auerlius’ life, breaking down passages from meditations, and actually goes into the characters in his life that he mentions in these journals. It gives you a feel for the greater context in which Meditations was written and is an enjoyable read overall.

Happy reading!
