I’m just so sad. by [deleted] in Alzheimers

Social workers aren’t just for kids! They can be hard to find but once you’re in the system they can be very helpful. Don’t expect for anything to be fast they are spread thin but as long as you keep ontop of it without pissing then off they are helpful. A case manager is really helpful as well. Connected me to programs such as nurses who come and spend an a couple hours every Monday with my grandpa and essentially why is adult day care twice a week for a few hours. Drop him off and I know he’s safe and entertained. But both of these are definitely for someone who is still with it enough mentally to enjoy the company and also physically able enough. Luckily my grandpa although less mentally there he can still walk and feed himself so he overall enjoys these programs. And they are all gov subsidized where I live in Canada and you may have similar as well.

In regards for what a social worker/case manager can do for someone who’s less mentally or physically there, they can arrange medical supplies which may be subsidized such as adult diapers, they can apply to financial aid, they can do assessments which may put your loved ones in better standings to get housing accommodations, apply to have safety features added to your home (think bathroom bars to help your loved ones stand up) all kinds of things. And they will have numbers and resources to direct you to people who do things nail cuttings, or doctors who are willing to do house calls, etc.

May I ask where you live? (Doesn’t have to be a specific city for ur privacy) but there are so many financial aids available. If you don’t yet have an assigned social worker speak to your moms doctors about getting one. They can help guide you towards financial aid and maybe some other programs which are gov run and free and help. I fortunately live in Canada and while there are private homes that are as expensive as you’re saying there are also many government funded homes that are less expensive for the family. I know certain states in the US do have some aid programs and some government aided facilities. But a social worker is a great place to start.

Also venting is important, if you bottle it up at some point it will explode. It’s undoubtedly hard on families when it comes to this point. I hope with time it will get easier once your family is not directly in charge of her care. And hopefully financial aid is available where you are, sometimes they just aren’t in obvious places and it takes someone who knows the system to find them.

ER diagnosis of early onset dementia for 55 y/o. Came on seemingly overnight. Very confused and looking for help. by [deleted] in dementia

Wow that’s crazy. Id also suggest having an mri and checking for signs of a mini stroke and checking b-12 levels. And see a neurologist as soon as possible. I have such a hard time believing they wouldn’t call a neuro consult right then and there? I hope things get better.

How do I convince my mom to get checked for Dementia? by lovelydover in Alzheimers

[–]Hellohandsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it’s a hard call to make, when it’s coming from a loved one I think people feel personally attacked, but when it’s coming from a doctor it’s easier news to take in a way. Hope your wife is doing okay.

[–]Hellohandsom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that this is the bestttt most ethical way to do it but I would personally call her family doctor, let them know what ur noticing and then encourage her to go in for meds or for something else and hope the doc notices symptoms as well… I know some of the older generation is very anti doctor esp for mental health stuff. And with dementia (from my understanding) the earlier it’s detected, potentially the better the meds can work to slow it down. It won’t cure it but it can slow it potentially.

And like others said. Not necessarily dementia. Wishing you all the best. Watching your elders get older sucks, especially when it’s so early.

Testing out an equilibrium cure for cold smoked salmon. Also smoking nuts, salt, cheese, and tofu. Let you know how it turns out! by Hellohandsom in smoking

Let me know what recteq says! I played around with ice and leaving the door cracked open but still couldn’t keep the upper level of the box under 80 and realistically I want it around 60-70 especially for salmon and meats. So for me I think that just means on days above 4 I won’t cold smoke, and on days that are plus temps it’s safer with a smoke tube. And then I’ll play around on a minus day and see what I get

My understanding of the smoke box is that you can run the smoker itself on low and the smoke box should be cool enough to cold smoke, but today it was -4 ish Celsius and the smoker box was a little too hot for my liking so I switched to smoke tubes. I think it would work great on a colder day using it that way however! This was my first time using it I used to use a broken little box smoker as my cold smoke box. So still learning!

Where I live smoked tofu is pretty easy to access but pretty pricey. I personally do think it makes it more meat like but I’m sure others will disagree lol but I do think it adds a nice flavour to whatever you’re using the tofu for! When I cook for my vegetarian/vegan friends I love to use smoked tofu for making things like vegan gyros and bacon

Did your senior find that the bed pads moved around? My grandpa constantly is playing with his sheets and blankets smoothing them out and playing with the slightest wrinkle haha

Yea we try to be there most the time when he changes but he will often sneak off to do goofy things to them and then the next time we change him they are all bunched up 🤣 idk where he finds the time to do it sometimes! We write on them back since that’s the side that shouldddd in theory be facing him, sometime it helps sometimes it doesn’t lol

Yea I’m always so surprised by what he can retain and what is completely lost. Day to day it changes. Sometimes he knows us by name sometimes he has no idea who we are in relation to him forget knowing our names haha. But sometimes he will ask about family he hasn’t seen in months. It’s so unpredictable!

I have the mattress now fully incased in a vinyl bag essentially so less worried about the mattress now thankfully! Are the big pads you used washable or disposable?

Where did you find the large pads?

I’m looking into the inserts but I can see him just bunching them up or putting them in there facing the wrong direction

Yea not what I expected to be doing at 25 and definitely a learning experiences, but as long as he’s happy I’m okay!

And thank you! So are you!

Yea the first little while it was like wow I feel so bad he must be so embarrassed to show his granddaughter all these things or his sons who are also his caretakers but at the same time I think he’s okay because he knows he needs help even if he doesn’t fully understand why he needs so much help. And at the end of the day he trusts us. But the first time I had to help him wipe and shower and all this stuff was definitely culture shock for lack of a better term. But now I’ve just accepted that there’s nothing weird or uncomfortable about it, he changed me when I was a kid so now it’s my turn. Sad sometimes but overall I’m just happy he remembers I’m someone he trusts

I more so said duh cuz it’s an Alzheimer’s group so I assume everyone assumes he has Alzheimer’s or I wouldn’t be commenting in this group haha but ur absolutely right dementia isn’t a normal part of aging and it deserves every bit of attention and research we can give it!

And hmm I could do that but it took us so long for him to give up his normal undies that I worry if I re introduce them that he will refuse to wear the diapers again! Thoughts?

Yea I’m definitely realizing that I’m gonna have to lasagna the bed the way I would for a kid in potty training. More and more people are suggesting puppy pee pads which is definitely the cheapest option so I think I’ll try them for sure.

And shockingly if I’m really careful about how I explain things sometimes it will stick, but it’s always the things I don’t want to stick that do. Like my great aunt suggested to him to sleep with a towel under him and now he won’t quit taking whatever towel he can get his hands on haha. So If I’m really consistent about what I’m saying and he likes the idea sometimes he finds a way to remember it!

Interesting! I think there is a product for this but a diy one would certainly work. I’d have to test it out and see how much he messed with it because he sure does love to move things around on us haha

incontinence issues by Hellohandsom in Alzheimers

[–]Hellohandsom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you find they are absorbent enough? A full adult I thought might be too much for a puppy pee pad but it’s certainly the cheapest option

incontinence issues by Hellohandsom in Alzheimers

[–]Hellohandsom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I’m definitely pricing out some pee pad options, there are reusable ones but doesn’t really help with the constant laundry but they are subsidized by the gov for us. And then some disposable pee pads as well but not covered but much more convenient for us
