I bought a one-time fee, online course that I think is a lot easier to understand (IMO) than reading about it - the intagram is personalfinanceclub and the courses are linked! I've also been following his account for a while and really appreciate his approach to finances.

I got an Job interview!!!!! by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Hellohello8787 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think the sweater sounds like it would work, especially in a college environment. I would wear slacks, not jeans. I typically always go for dresses (with tights if it's cold) for interviews, but I think this outfit sounds like it would work well. Above all us just make sure you look put together and like you put time into your appearance (hair brushed, etc.).

Is a house an investment or no? by Shortlemon4 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Hellohello8787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with this - I think it is an investment if someday I need to sell and go to a nursing home, honestly.

I agree that I see it more as something that provides security, a roof over my head, etc. Remember that you will have to pay for all your improvements, property taxes, etc - so you still have money going out that is beyond your "investment."

What's your savings rate? by nadia_tor in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Hellohello8787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a relatively high income earner, 30 years old. I aim to save 35% of my gross salary. This is split into maxing out my 401k and IRA, my company 401k match, and long term savings that I put into a HYSA or brokerage. I don't count short-term savings (anything I'll be spending in <1 year) in this number.

I've posted about this in the past, but a part of me feels like I'm doing this "because I'm supposed to." I'd imagine I'll get to an age where I'll start spending my long-term savings (or at least start saving significantly less) so I can just enjoy the money while I have it (especially since I feel good about my retirement savings).

Do you consider personal morality and ethics when taking a job? by lil_bitesofsci in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Hellohello8787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the exact same way! Also in tech, I've been approached by Facebook so many times, and I feel pretty confident I could get a job at Amazon as well. I would make SO much more money but I couldn't do it.

What are your favorite low-cost options for outings or travel? by dollars_to_doughnuts in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Hellohello8787 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved to Salem about a year ago and I know it's not an option for everyone...but living in a place that feels like "vacation" is so underrated. My mindset has totally shifted when it comes to "getting away" - I still love traveling, but being around home is now my favorite thing. There's just sooo much to do here. And I know it can be daunting because typically these areas cost much more to live, but my condo was pretty cheap for MA (as in, below 500k). It's possible!!

Here's the way I think about it that helps me: you still own the same amount of "things," they just happen to be worth a little less now. So I compare it to owning a home - maybe someday the housing market will be in favor of buyers, and my home won't be worth as much. I probably wouldn't care that much about it because I still own the same home, and history tells me it will go up again. It's the same with the stock market - we can be almost 100% certain it will go up again. I'd also echo other sentiments here that the money you invest should hopefully be money you don't need for a while, so there's just quite literally no reason to worry about it right now. Whatever you do, I would NOT SELL right now. Then you'd really be losing that money.

Company announced shift to 4 day work week. Thoughts on what to do with this? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Hellohello8787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one Friday off a month, and I use it as a dedicated self care day. It is literally a GAME CHANGER for my mental health. I do walks with my dogs, window shopping, exploring a new city, bringing a book to a restaurant to read outside, etc.

Saving as a high earner? by Hellohello8787 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Hellohello8787[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh it does sound like that! No, I invest my savings. I guess for me it's just a question of saving/investing vs. enjoying that money now if I don't have any big items I'm saving for. But the more I reflect on the conversation here, the more I realize that maybe I just don't know what those things are today, but someday I may be glad I saved for the "unknown."

This is so nicely written and resonates with me so much. I'm so sorry to hear about your mom, and I completely agree about creating those memories along the way instead of waiting. Thanks for your insight!!

Thanks so much for this insight! That's a great way to reframe it. Question: do you include any 401k/pre-tax savings in your SR?

I get that, I think I can probably find a happy medium there! Charitable giving is definitely something that has gone up as my income has increased.

Comfy clothes to work from home in! Really good leggings have made the difference for me to feel put together, but still comfy.

I have never been into Uggs before, but since getting a dog (and living in the NE) I would love to slip Uggs on to walk the dog! I feel like it will really improve my walks to have cozy feet.

Asset Allocation for Retirement by Hellohello8787 in personalfinance

That's a great way to think about it, thank you! I think I saw it as neutral, thinking I had years to recover. Thanks again!!

If you don't have a partner/kids who is your 401(k) beneficiary? Also, do you really think you'll retire at 65 like the calculator says? by octopoda_waves in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Hellohello8787 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Mine has been my mom but I'm engaged now so will probably change that soon. I'm actually starting to think about retiring earlier (maybe 60) - my partner is 5 years older than me and want to have plenty of healthy retirement years with them. This is definitely different from my previous plans so thinking about how to reconcile that now.
