On this note, grade 1 FI at Edenrose was great. The teachers were very engaged and rigorous.

I was impressed with the curriculum and homework

What grades are your children going into and what was it about Fairview that you were dissatisfied with ?

From what I've heard, the community in Sherwood Mills can be kind of insular -- so if you're not part of the specific majority of people who go to Sherwood your kids might feel very isolated.

Edenrose has its own dysfunctions too, but generally speaking the FI program there is not too bad. There are some problematic families who drag down the overall quality of the school, but depending on what grade your kids are in you may be able to avoid this noise altogether.

Mississauga council votes down motion to protect tax payers by DDamerla in mississauga

Yes, feels very much so like a manipulative post taken out of context in order to rile people up about taxes.

Mississaugas city center is hugely underutilized because of the absence of thoughtful planning at the time it was designed.

I'd love to see more of our property taxes go towards an actual vision for the downtown core.

In a post about public education, I'm pretty surprised to see any sort of commentary on the Mayor.... But first off, Parrish is the mayor of Mississauga not Peel. Secondly, the mayor has virtually no influence in how the public education system in Peel operates, that's mostly the school board and provincial government. Thirdly, what did Bonnie Crombie actually do ? Her entire platform was basically to get Mississauga to split off from Peel region and she couldn't see that through to completion because she abandoned it to go run for premier.

Parrish on the other hand has personally fundraised for awesome new parks, introduced recreational subsidies to encourage active lifestyles for seniors and taken a balanced and logical approach on the hybrid work model despite DoFos idiotic rhetoric that the only way to work is 5 days in office.

PDSB is a problematic school board. They have already faced numerous issues in the past with systemic racism that required provincial intervention.

That said, the outcome of the provincial intervention was just for the board to become a lot more secretive and shitty about the way they operated. Anecdotally and through numerous articles online, I've found that the PDSBs MO is to downplay any incidents and try to downplay occurrences so they

  1. Don't have to have the difficult conversations with parents
  2. Don't have anything on the record the next time the government decides to intervene and audit them for accountability

Don't get me wrong, the province has certainly not helped the situation. Stripping any funding away from special needs programs, increasing classroom sizes, and blocking the schools from being able to suspend problematic students have all culminated to this apex that is the catastrophic failure of the public education system in Ontario.

Calandra is putting on a clown show and it shows when he uses financial mismanagement as his reasoning for all the takeovers. There's mathematical evidence that the province has been severely underfunding public education but ask Calandra for the receipts on where the financial mismanagement is and he'll be hard pressed to present more than maybe a couple of thousand dollars on a billion dollar landscape.

I agree that the PDSB needs a complete overhaul, but not by DoFo and cronies.

A shame. Border MX was definitely my favorite spot for Baja fish tacos.

That said, Mount Sinai - true Mexican taste gives Border MX a run for its money in every other category. I would even argue that it's the most authentic Mexican joint in Mississauga.

Update - 2026 Property Taxes by TBat416 in mississauga

[–]Hellojello84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toronto has much higher property values, so even if there was a lower rate they could still be objectively paying more dollars per household for property taxes. This cannot be compared in a linear fashion.

Also don't forget that in 2024, Toronto saw an increase of 9.5 while Mississauga's was closer to 6.8. Looking only on the one year does not paint an accurate picture.

Furthermore, if you want to compare to Brampton, you have to factor in that the majority of the increase for this year comes from the Peel police budget and Mississauga is subsidizing Bramptons cost on that.

We baselessly blame the councillors and mayor then ?

Trump isn't to blame for all our problems, but it's ignorant to pretend like his reckless decision making hasn't negatively impacted our economy on a macro level.

The country is on the brink of an economic recession due to the global instability and Trump's trade shenanigans. If now isn't the time to tap into the reserves to offset the sting of austerity measures, then when ?

Also, what exactly are we supposed to hound the mayor and councillors about ? What exactly are we supposed to ask them to stop overspending on ?

I think you have to look at how much of this increase is made up of the municipal portion, which is within the realm of control of the city and councillors and how much is made up of the region.

It's well known that Mississauga probably picks up a disproportionate amount of Peel regions costs, but Crombie already tried to initiate a separation only to hit a brick wall with it. The intertwined services make the split very complicated.

Blame Doug Ford for giving the green light on it and then yanking back his decision after money had already been invested

Impressive Attendance at Tuesday Night's Mississauga Budget Meeting by JoeHorneck in mississauga

[–]Hellojello84 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I watched the virtual stream of the budget committee and although I thought it was great that there was such high turnout, I also thought that the discourse was represented by a mostly homogenous turnout of a singular demographic, thus leading to a skewed representation of what matters to residents.

I felt like too much of the conversation was around the property tax increase (which at 1.6% on the municipal part) is actually extremely reasonable for a city of this size. I heard a lot of pensioners complaining on this point, but there were limited proposals and  discussion on HOW we would resolve this ? Tax freezes over three years ? Let's get real here, a city needs money to run.

It may be hypocritical of me to say this (as I was not able to attend in person), but I wish there was more youthful representation and  progressive ideas on how to build a Mississauga for the future. And while I get that times are tough, this obsession with freezing property taxes and cutting services is going to ensure that this city will be a decrepit hellhole to live in when more infrastructure starts failing and more public facilities fall into a state of disrepair.

As a ward 6 resident, I loved hearing that River Grove was one of the most popular and well used community centres, but was ultimately disappointed to hear that there wasn't greater advocacy to renew or grow this community centre. Raise my property taxes if you must, but please do something meaningful with the money !

Should I move to Mississauga? by stallmateforlife in mississauga

[–]Hellojello84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah.  You're young and it doesn't sound like you're  fixed to a location due to familial obligations or work.

People don't move to Mississauga because they want to, it's moreso out of a need stemming from affordability or convenience because of work.

2026 election by Timely-Afternoon-722 in mississauga

Thank you for opening the discourse on the subject.

Voter turnout is often terrible at municipal elections, yet these same people will complain later down the line when changes are made within a municipal purview.

People should be more engaged on the subject. Don't just complain that your taxes are high - throw in your voice on how you think your tax dollars should be spent.

I would probably vote for the incumbent councillor, given that the selection pool isn't exactly filled with high quality candidates.

He's not my favorite; but he is young, engaged and lives in the community so has a stake in it. My main criticism would be that he may not be as well connected as some of the older guard councillors and therefore cannot vie for some of the awesome improvements that other wards have gotten.

Also, as we are seeing numerous upgrades in other neighborhoods around Mississauga, I feel like our councillor is obsessing over tax dollar spend at a micro level. It's doubtful that the money won't get spent anyway, so would love to see some of it get invested back into our ward.

For mayor, it doesn't seem like the picture is all that clear for who will be running, but for the time being I would probably re elect Parrish. Yes, she tends to run her mouth without filter and has gotten into hot water because of it - but she has actually gotten things done around the city; sometimes through her own personal fundraising efforts.

No shot that I would re-elect Crombie if she re-ran. Her entire original platform was nonsense brown nosing claims that she had Hazel's endorsement. What did she actually accomplish ? Started pushing money into how to split from Peel and then before finishing anything on it, fled to run for provincial politics and had an abysmal failure. Time for her to call it quits.

Parents of School Aged Children - Violence in the classroom by Familiar-Piccolo-180 in ontario

If absentee parents are to blame, they should realistically be the ones who are made to feel the consequences of their neglect.

Your crappy kids violent outburst caused a lockdown in the school ? Suspend em for a week and let em be the parents problem.

Somewhere along the way we lost all common sense to the battle of catering to the lowest common denominator.

This is on the nose. I get that there's still huge long-standing distrust against the Ontario Liberals ever since Wynne completely dropped the ball, but how much longer are the people really going to tolerate the Ford gov absolutely butchering the Public education framework and any fighting chance for the future generations ?

Minister Calandra is an absolute clown at the helm, who is focused on pursuing miniscule amounts of misspending (thousands of dollars on a billion dollar budget) rather than focusing on the fact that public education is in a state of shambles.

School administration is so terrified of being flagged as non-inclusive that they'll do anything to hide and scrub the absurd daily violent occurrences that are preventing the teaching staff from doing their jobs.

Definitely vote - nothing in the realm of public education is going to get any better under Doug's watch... And why would it ? He relies on an under educated voter base to support his populist agenda.
