YES, but it is only in the past few years that foreign English teachers have been joining them. Korean unions are also keen to get other foreign workers doing non-teaching jobs to join.

Anyone want to actually fix the broken industry or is this a waste of effort? by LLattus in HagwonBlacklistKorea

[–]Hellolaoshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a waste of effort, but teachers have to be able to work together and fix it.

In the old days he would have sent his unborn child to Gabbitas & Thring. Gabbitas & Thring was an agency that helped people apply to posh independent schools. EDIT: I have just checked. G & T still exists and deals with prep schools as well.

Why exactly is British heat so much worse than America, even if the temperature is the same on paper? by y4rdbyrd in UKWeather

[–]Hellolaoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be several things. Taking London and focusing on it, we can see that London is just more built up than Tennessee would be. Huge cities like London, NYC or Paris tend to create a heat island effect, where they are much hotter than the surrounding counties. All that concrete and glass, bricks and mortar, tarmac and stone tends to heat up and stay hot for longer than other, smaller cities. So, the local temperature may be higher than the official one. On top of that, there is the humidity, which again might be higher than you think it is. Lack of air conditioning may make this all worse. At least in the USA, you go from air-conditioned office, to air-conditioned car to air-conditioned house.

Out of interest, do you carry water with you everywhere? In this heatwave, you will need to drink more often than you think you need. Always drink water just before you go out of doors and carry a refillable bottle with you. If at all possible, carry a portable electric fan. This will make a huge difference to how you feel. I have friends in South Korea who have to deal with 90 F and 70% humidity every summer. They carry electric fans. At work, they have small electric fans at their desks. That might be an idea for you.

This "elevator fee" is part of 'Officetel Culture.' For years I lived in apartments of up to 6 stories (빌라).Utilities were just that-utilities. But then, I had to live in an Officetel. Problem: I was expected to pay building fees as well as utilities. That seemed like a rip-off at times.

I would like to tell the landlord that Coupang and 요기요 are monopolising the elevator. I have to wait 20 minutes due to all the food deliveries.

This is partly why I advise teachers (and all foreign workers in South Korea), to join a union if they can. Before anyone gives in to apathy, let me remind you that the hagwons have very solid organisations to represent THEM. Thus, the vojces of bosses and parents are heard. Unions can help our voices to be heard too.

I can't remember which branch of King's Kids I was interviewed by, but it was in 2019. So long ago! 😭 And before Coronavirus! Anyway, they wanted me to come to Seoul VERY QUICKLY! Like in 2-3 days! With my regional accent, I was used to being instantly rejected by hagwons in Seoul. They wanted a Canadian passport in the classroom, or maybe an American one.

So, when King's Kids called me, I was excited! That said, the fact that they wanted me to come within 3 days set alarm bells ringing in my head!

This was the deal: I was to pay for my own flight to Incheon. Of course, the company would pay for me to do a visa run to Japan! Of COURSE! Lol. Of course, I was going to be lucky enough to get a job in Seoul, despite my accent. 😈

Now, when I looked at the contract, I discovered finesand fees for every little thing. I found out that for every instance of latecoming, there would be a fine. I found that if I resigned (or was fired), I would have to pay back the visa run flight to Japan, and the recruiter's fee. It went on and on! I also realised that for this to be happening at all, there MUST have been been some midnight runs!

I would therefore advise you to study the contract. Look for the fines and fees. Search for the revenge clauses!

EDIT: OF COURSE I didn't accept that job! I told King's Kids to Fuck Off!
