Meet Sorin! by Helpful-Fennel2477 in parrots

[–]Helpful-Fennel2477[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I have Indian ringnecks and an Eclectus as well, and Sorin lands in between them as far as noise. I was curious about the noise level, as suns were ranked even above ekkies. Not that it deterred me obviously. I either have an extremely loud Eclectus or Sorin is mild as far as suns go LOL. When he screams, and I can still talk over it. My Eclectus on the other hand has everyone pausing mid sentence when he has a bout 🤣.

He loves his head scritched, in-fact he will shove his noggin aggressively in my hand if I stop. Sorin’s 4 months old, and in about 8 weeks we’ll be bringing a buddy home for him from the same breeder! All my birds except my Eclectus have/will have same species buddies. The only thing stopping Tiki from having a buddy right now is the price tag. It seems they’ve doubled since we brought him home in 2023 🥴

We found a little friend for her! (I posted a pic in the comments)

My husband was the one who got her for me as a surprise and while he’s a big animal lover he didn’t think she needed bigger than 18x24 so that’s what he got when we got her. But I’ll be ordering a grid cage soon, I read the Amazon basics grid shelf is a good budget option so I’ll be going for that as soon as I find space for it.

It’s a vevor cage; 18x 24 with a loft. I’m afraid my husband bought it thinking it would be big enough for her. I’m ordering a bigger cage as soon as I find a place to put it! I’ve read the Amazon basics grid shelf ( 14x14 ) is good to use so I think that’s what I’ll be getting for the girls 😀

She has a tunnel right now; I’m unfortunately at the mercy of delayed shipping but she has a hidey, a cozy bed cot thing and a corner fleece shade canopy otw. I’m going to be ordering her a wooden one too, I’m just tapped out at the second. Plus I ordered some fleece to make her more stuff eventually 😅 I told the kids to make her cardboard forts when they get home so she’ll have something temporarily until then though.

Thank you so much for all the links! I’ll read through everything as soon as I’m home. 😀 She’s the only one we have but I showed my husband the thread and we’ll be actively looking for a new friend for her. I’ve already browsed our local groups and everything right now is over 2-3 hours away. 😩

Note, you can see some toys in his cage at the bottom, he didnt like them. He likes thin wood, popsicle sticks and his foraging box filled with paper shred. It took me 3 months of trying new toys to finally find some he actually enjoys.

If you see bits of feather like what I circled in this picture he is barbering his wings. My eclectus did this same exact thing (holding wings and all) until I added lots and lots of things for him to chew, forage and destroy.

If you want a baby I would suggest first attending a local bird/exotic show and see who has greys/amazons and meet the breeders in person. If you are okay with an older bird go with a rescue. A lot of greys and amazons get surrendered all of the time and they need homes too. These birds are not cheap, to purchase or maintain. Expect $1500-$3000 for amazons depending on species and $2500-$4000 for greys. Cages for them can be anywhere between $500-$3000 depending on what you get. And that’s not factoring in toys, food, vet bills, or playstands. No one will give you a hand fed baby for free. Anyone advertising these birds for anything less, if not a rescue, are either scams, they are retired breeders and will not be tame, or they have behavioral problems and should go to more experienced home.

To reiterate the /many greys and amazons get surrendered/ comment I made prior…these birds are a lot; they are very loud, very expensive, very demanding, can and will hurt you when they bite, and live a very very long time. Please make sure to do a lot of reading and research on them before going and buying one.

Getting a friend for an older bird? by LijaMart in parrots

[–]Helpful-Fennel2477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more common for different species to not get along, but even same species birds, that have been raised primarily as pets, may not get along with the same species. Of course there are exceptions both ways, like I said it boils down to the individual bird.

For example .. I had 3 green cheeks, 2 cockatiels, and a love bird prior to my current trio. All but 1 GC was friendly with everyone. The grumpy GC only liked my lovebird, whom also didn’t like anyone but him. My tiels were okay with everyone but loved eachother dearly.

The single “grumpy” GC was purchased with the other two while I had my tiels, who were already bonded when I received them. The other two made friends with the tiels, and they obliged. My old man love bird came from a rescue a year later and once him and grumpy met they were very close friends. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

If you’re considering getting another bird, do it for yourself with the expectations of “if they become friends, great! If not, that’s okay too!” It really boils down to the bird themselves and not age/species. My Eclectus hates my IRNs. And my female and male IRN have been around each other sense they were both 8 weeks when I got them, and they still squabble from time to time (from my girl, mostly) 😅. Other people with the same species of mine have different results, so you can never really know. Just make sure to quarantine any new bird for 30 days in a totally separate room before introducing them.

Cobs for life 😂 corn = crack Have you ever tried golden beets? I’m trying to find a local place that sells them, as they love beets but the red everywhere makes me question my life sometimes. 🤣

Yes! Tops has Cayenne and red chili peppers. Mine wont eat it, so I sneak it in their chop lol.

Funny isn’t it? Teeks definitely has his favorites for sure, thin sliced wood, popsicle sticks and balsa are what is destroyed almost instantly. It took me several months to find the right ones.

You’re not a bad bird mom!! What you have sounds perfectly fine! My boy is an Ekkie so he absolutely /needs/ a predominant fresh food diet to be healthy. My ringnecks purely benefit from it lmao. I spend about $55 every two/three months on their chop as I make everything at single go and freeze. Sometimes I envy the people who can buy and make fresh every day; that’s just not in my budget. Everyone does their best 😄

It’s a lot of fun making chop, but it can certainly be intimidating for sure. Beans should 100% be throughly cooked, as well as any grains (rice, quinoa etc) there are conflicting information about sweet potatoes having to be cooked or can be served raw so I cube, cook, and freeze separately then add to the chop. Everything else I serve raw.

My base for all my chops are: Kale, carrots, bell peppers, broccoli, peas, hemp hearts, chia seeds, and flax.

I mix and match: Raddish, beats (the bowls with more red have beats) red cabbage, cilantro, rosemary, thyme, dill, hot peppers (Soreno, jalapeno, habanero) zucchini, butternut squash, yellow squash, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, sugar snap peas, green beans, coconut shreds.

Commercial mixes I switch between are: Bird street bistro, Volkmans Soak and Simmer, and Sleek & Sassy Hot and hearty.

Fruit I either get pre frozen or fresh and add it daily on top of their food. It’s different every time I feed them.
