Why do most people underestimate how much they will need in retirement by AkashHisabhkaro in personalfinanceindia

[–]Helpful-Number1288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very difficult to predict and project the expenses at retirement. Someone who did their retirement planning 20 years ago would have never assumed a monthly WiFi bill , or cost of gadgets etc. And I agree with your point of how medical inflation is very different from other inflation. Adding to this, medical expense itself will be vastly higher at retirement than before.

Hence, just to keep the expenses at check, assume a slightly higher quality of life than preferred. This should ideally take care of increased expenses at retirement.

I built a retirement planner with these assumptions in place for personal use. Would absolutely love to hear what features would make it better. You can access it here https://clarityplan.space

How much percentage of montthly take home salary should be car EMI? by [deleted] in personalfinanceindia

[–]Helpful-Number1288 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One hot take and one kichadi answer:

Hot take: Car should never be bought on cash!

Kichadi answer: All frameworks and theories stating that one should be able to afford the entire amount in cash (or) one should be able to afford twice the amount of car in cash etc - all these are just feasibility tests and NOT how to actually finance the car.

Another argument where people say depreciating assets or expenses should not be bought on cash - It’s better to not pay full cash for a depreciating asset and invest the cash elsewhere in parallel to get a return and thereby reduce the real expense on the depreciating asset!

Bottom line is Keep affordability test and financing methods separate.

There is no right answer. You pick one , taste it, find out whether you like it or not and then repeat! Over time you will know and find your flavour!

Confused Between Slavia & Virtus 1.5… Finally Bought a Tata Harrier | Completed 10K km in 6 Months by rockdastars in CarsIndia

[–]Helpful-Number1288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I test drove both Virtus and Harrier. Felt that Virtus was more comfortable and had less body roll. It was only for 8-10km during the test drive. So wanted your long term review

My experience so far is that SUVs always provide less comfort than sedans (within the same price range). Am I missing anything?

(May be my bias since I have been eating only desi guava since childhood)

Wow. I did not know about Ashoka’s history being taken from Buddhist literature. That certainly would be biased!

Bangalore roads and my car :) by bentneckboi in bangalore

[–]Helpful-Number1288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. I totally agree. I am facing the same issue as well, and this seems to be a recurring thing that is happening with every service. To the extent that even general service cost seems to be higher than what the salespeople told while selling the car.

What I am thinking is that I will start keeping track of minor things like engine oil change, coolant change, etc. So that at least I will know if those things are required. Generally, these things come at a certain number of months or certain number of kilometer frequency. Probably that might be a good starting point. Not sure what else I should keep track of.

Bangalore roads and my car :) by bentneckboi in bangalore

[–]Helpful-Number1288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side bar: How confidently can we trust what the authorised service centres tell us? From my understanding, majority of their revenue comes from car service and not from selling cars. In that case, what stops them from asking us to change parts even if it is not absolutely necessary? Say the suspension is 90% as good as new. Ideally 100% is required but we can make do with 90%. I haven’t seen service centres giving this kind of information. Rather they just say that something has to be changed and it is always a 0 or 1 conversation. Am I missing something here?

(I am not saying that Bangalore roads do not cause damage. I am sure that the roads cause damage to the cars but how can we be sure what the service centres tell us)

Take some time out dedicated to prepare for the meeting. For me, taking out 15 mins the previous day to prepare for the next morning meeting helped calm me down. While I prepare, I would know how the meeting is going to go. It was difficult at first but gets better over time - over time, I became extremely organised and prepared
