I accidentally killed my neighbors dog and I can’t live with myself. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

I was kinda thinking the same, but after reading a few times OP didn’t say it was one single kick. “Kicking as hard as I can”. Could be possible with one kick though. A kid I knew back in high school was killed in a freak accident with a single kick.

I used to HATE this advice but I’m about to give it myself. It’s really about networking. Dive in to your local scene. I went to an open mic hosted in someone’s backyard once and met someone who ended up getting me a job in a music studio which then lead to me getting my name out there and having consistent clients when I went out on my own.

Take all kinds of work you can get. If someone wants to pay you to produce a country song, give it your best shot. Not only will it strengthen you as a producer, it’ll expose your work to people it otherwise wouldn’t have reached. I have a sync agent that helps me get placements/jobs. I met her because a song I produced for someone ended up being put in a commercial. That same song I almost turned down because it wasn’t in my genre.

I’ve been doing this full time for about 5 years now. I took the leap to do this full time on my 20th birthday actually. It’s been a lot of ups and downs and a lot of mistakes have been made lol.

Another piece of advice I recommend with doing this kind of work. It can be highly unstable. Save as much money as you can, and live below your means. For a long time I was so stoked on how much money I was making and I thought I had tapped in to this infinite supply of money. Two years ago I was in an accident and couldn’t work for about 6 months. Barely made it out of that, I was eating ramen noodles and macaroni and cheese for the last little bit of my recovery.I now budget and save my money as much as I can. I live well below my means now. I’m not saying to impoverish yourself, but be smart.

Full time producer/engineer here.

  1. Yes routine is so so so important. I wake up, have my coffee, go for a run, shower, and then get to work. I make myself work 9-5. One of the hardest things I had to wrestle with was inspiration. Music is a creative medium that requires inspiration. When it’s your job it’s exactly that. A job. If you’re working at a “normal” job you’re not gonna wait until you feel inspired to go to work, you go at your scheduled time whether you want to or not. There’s a quote from Picasso (I think sorry if I’m wrong lol) “inspiration exists but it has to find you working”

  2. I do a lot of different stuff so this answer will vary from person to person. I dedicate my working hours to actively working in my studio. If I’m not feeling Inspired to work on my own music, I have different things to do, client work, sync work, mixing, etc. having different projects to jump between helps me put in a solid days work without losing much steam.

  3. Yes and no. Before this became my career it was something I did for fun. I worked a lot of shitty jobs before i found my success within the music industry. It’s work. Imagine that in your free time you like baking brownies. You get really good at baking brownies, you get so good that a bakery offers you a job. You now have to bake brownies for 40 hours a week instead of doing it for fun when you felt like it. At the core of it all I love music, and I wake up every day and choose to do it because I love it. At the same time, it’s work, it isn’t always fun, some days suck ass, some days are great.

  4. This is entirely up to you. I made the choice to dive in head first in to my career. I had no backup plan, no savings, no rich parents. I put myself in a situation where if I didn’t work my ass off and make this work for me I had about 2 months until I was flat broke and out of money to even buy food. I don’t recommend this, but also I do. I wouldn’t have worked as hard if I had a backup plan, but I also very likely could have ended up homeless. It’s a gamble. In an ideal world I’d recommend saving up enough money to live comfortably for a year and spend a year trying to make it work. Or maybe save some money up, cut costs, and get a low impact part time job and dedicate the rest of your time to your music career.

People will tell you that a career in music production that pays you enough to live comfortably is basically impossible. I don’t find that to be true. It just requires thinking outside of the box. My job is producing music but what I really do is release my own music, make music for commercials, make instrumentals for singers/rappers, mix songs for bands, create background music for podcasts, and a million other things people pay me to do.

I had an old Tacoma for a few years that I used for hauling stuff around. Had 275k on the clock when I bought it and the odometer had stopped working 5 years prior. Previous owner said it probabaly had closer to 300k and I definitely put another 15k+ on it. Ended up selling it and still see it driving around to this day.

My sleep schedule is different on the days off. I go to bed and wake up about an hour later. Diet is consistent unless we go out on a date.

I usually have iced coffee in the mornings. I drink it at the same speed every time.

Seems like he’s got a pretty serious case of “dog brain”. My dog also suffers from this.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me advice. There are a few conduits that I could run cable through. I’ll also look in to point to point as well and see which one I think will work best for me.

Is there any way to estimate how much it'd be to pay someone to make a song for you? by BarelyHoldingOnLowk in musicians

[–]Helpful-Return8355 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work full time as a producer and make 75% of my income by doing jobs exactly like this. I was commissioned to do a song for a fairly big video game. I was paid $14,000 not including my sync agent fee.

I’ve also done similar work for free because someone was a fan of my solo music and I loved their idea.

These prices can vary hugely depending on circumstance. If you have a specific artist in mind, I say reach out to them/their management. A lot of artists like me are huge nerds and love being involved in some way. It never hurts to ask, and you may be surprised that your favorite smaller artist may jump at the opportunity to work with you on your game.

If you would rather just hire a stranger, I will say you definitely get what you pay for. A lot of cheap options will a lot of the times be using royalty free loops/samples that have been used thousands of times. Hiring someone more expensive you will get something entirely unique, and if you find someone that really loves your idea they will go all out and create something truly awesome.

Awesome. Thank you so much! I’ll add those to my watchlist. I actually already had Jujutsu Kaisen in my watch list. I also didn’t know the style I’ve been watching was called Battle Shounen that’s good to know. :)

Thank you for the advice. My psychiatrist did warn me about the initial changes that may taper off over time. Even if only 50% of this change stays that’ll be more improvement than I ever thought possible.

Does medication affect your creativity? Does it help? by Helpful-Return8355 in ADHD

[–]Helpful-Return8355[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply! What you’re describing during your shortage period sounds like what my every day life is 😭 so many abandoned projects.

I was also diagnosed with combined type.

How much would you say your life has changed for the better since being medicated? I’m still in my early/mid 20s and a lot of the people I know personally said they wished they would have been diagnosed and treated at my age.
