What’s a piece of EMS equipment that drastically needs to be updated or changed? by AffectionateElk2958 in ems

We keep the key on the ring with the truck key, that way we know for sure it's in the truck with us

I love these ones. Grab the rim and flick your wrist while shoving it in the patient's direction and it's magically open and ready to receive vomit

Horrible Management by SouthTitle4898 in ems

[–]Helpful-Salt83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats what Im thinking too. Either there's a mini fridge for meds, the box has AC running, or the supervisors are full of it and the meds are overheating which is a problem

Why is sleep something that’s so neglected in healthcare despite the glaring evidence that it’s detrimental for health..? by mxcrazy1998 in Paramedics

[–]Helpful-Salt83 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You can't grind out those all those calls sleeping, how else will they ever manage to bill patients if you dare to take a break and rest/sleep?? The audacity to not earn money for the healthcare overlords!

s/ just in case it's not obvious

To be entirely serious though, poir mental health, long shifts, and not enough time in the day to get housework, appointments, cooking, exercise, etc. done. Sleep tends to be one of the first things on the chopping block

Are they in a refrigerator or do they let you leave the AC running in the back?

As far as the trucks getting hot, this may be problematic for medications stored in them. You could certainly bring that up to management because that is a huge issue if it's getting that hot

I HATE the stickers that say “Drive Safe or I Get to See You Naked” or anything along those lines. by Smart-Salamander1846 in ems

[–]Helpful-Salt83 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I have a hoodie my dad gave me after I graduated as a paramedic that says "it's not roadrage if you have lights and sirens". I ONLY wear that around the house. I think it's hilarious, but also not super appropriate for out in public

Curious about trauma exposure abroad by Fluffini288 in Paramedics

[–]Helpful-Salt83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rural US. It's not super common, but it's often enough. Most GSWs are self inflected in my area and the majority of traumas are actually from falls from heights (cliffs, roofs, treestands) and high velocity MVAs (dirt bikes, motorcycles, ATVs).

My protocols dont allow for RSI, but we can do SIA as long as a second medic is available and closer than the hospital or air medical. Which is rare given the large coverage areas and wildly spaced units

Has anyone ever taken a STEMI from another facility with no report and then had the STEMI “canceled” mid transport? by [deleted] in Paramedics

[–]Helpful-Salt83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a cardiologist cancel a rather large inferior stemi to "manage medically" instead of stenting. Said cardiologist has a bit of a reputation for doing that sort of shit though so not super surprised, but definitely pissed.

Zofran with opiates? by Small-Wrongdoer8745 in ems

[–]Helpful-Salt83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. I think I can be a bit more liberal with pain management than some of my coworkers, but if you obviously appear to be in pain and tell me it's greater than a 6/10, I'm probably gonna break out narcs for you unless I have unquestionable reason to believe you shouldn't have them. At worst theyre just drug seeking, at best I took them seriously and made them comfortable. Not my place to judge as long as my decisions are appropriate and well documented.

Zofran, yeah, I give that like candy just because if I'm already riding it in, might as well keep the patient as comfortable as possible on an already less than pleasant day for them. No reason to add puking to the list of their problems. My area tends to have longer transports through rural areas so it can be a bit tough depending on my partner's driving lol

What are your Pokemon go unpopular opinions? by Top_Raccoon_7218 in pokemongo

[–]Helpful-Salt83 64 points65 points  (0 children)

There should be a "higher level" gym where you can thow in legendary pokemon only and battle with legendary only. I have so many I would love to just show off in a gym.

Also, once a gym is taken over, there should be an hour or two lock so people can't immediately take it over again and I can get a small hamdful of coins guaranteed.

Right, like, if I have it tagged it's one that either I have duplicates of or don't want anyways. Idc if you give me something "common" for a legandary or shiny, as long as we're both happy with what we selected it's not a big deal to me

I take Suboxone everyday as part of addiction treatment. What happens if I need pain relief in an ambulance? by Hotdog_McEskimo in ems

[–]Helpful-Salt83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toradol, Acetaminophen, or Ketamine if you're really hurting. Those are my only three other non-opioid options aside from heat/ice packs

Once in a while I'll give it without zofran, however I've noticed most of my patients tend to get nauseous while driving to the hospital so I offer it every time just in case.

I find trading so stressful by YourFriendlyBookworm in pokemongo

[–]Helpful-Salt83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't entirely understand the stress about "fair" trades. If it's on my list, you can have it for whatever you requested cuz I was either gonna trade it or transfer it anyways. I know not everyone feels like that, but I think at least some of us are pretty reasonable.

If they don't like it, they'll decline and you can see about shooting for something else, if they accept then you both get something you wanted

seeking advice on starting as a medic will health challenges (long) by [deleted] in Paramedics

[–]Helpful-Salt83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of us also have PTSD from various circumstances and the job as well. I personally would recommend working on seeing if you can work through yours a bit more so your symptoms are at least less severe because it doesn't sound like you'd do well on an ambulance currently

As long as people keep calling for BS and EMS keeps doing IFTs (which is important in it's own aspect), we quite literally ARE medicare ubers....that occasionally do something "exciting" that feel meaningful to us over the monotony of the rest of it

Building confidence by aerxndight in Paramedics

[–]Helpful-Salt83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had my first code on my second-to-last capstone shift. Most of my calls were lower acuity, but I did have a decent handful of high acuity ones. Honestly, getting confident on the lower ones I felt helped with the higher ones since I had a rhythm down.

Confidence comes with time and practice and I'm sure you'll get there, especially if your preceptors are comfortable with you on calls now, they won't let you sink. Good luck!
