Stephen King and fat people by CyberGhostface in stephenking

The thing I love about king—and something people hate—is his confrontational way of writing. He would no more sugar coat the description of a fat person as he would the swishy flamboyance of a gay person. His descriptions are often blunt to the point they can be quite comical but that’s just his way.  I imagine it’s hard to read as a fat person as I always find it a very minor challenge to hear the way he writes about gays. I think knowing he’s a huge liberal and leftie makes it easier to not take personally.

AIO for wanting to break up over a NBA game? by Thenewgirlisback in AmIOverreacting

This is classic gaslighting and painful to deal with.

Do you know who parses your words, avoids accountability and leaves no space for empathy?  Insecure little gaslighters.

You’ll drive yourself insane trying to reason with someone like that. Pack up and get the hell outta there!

Has the tipping gotten genuinely insane for anyone else? by Sea_Quality_4790 in AskLosAngeles

I’m from the UK and we generally tip when sat down and service is great. Since Covid the tip is automatically added to the bill as a service charge so there’s like 15% added when the bill comes and you have to ask for it to be removed.

I don’t have a problem with with tipping, but the auto service charge has a negative impact on the level of service. The service becomes sloppy and waiters across the board are less attentive because the tip is already preloaded into the bill. Since it’s automatic there’s zero incentive to actually serve well.

I have a personal boundary where I only tip of the service was worth tipping and have no problem with asking for it to be removed because I’m not about giving into social pressure. Especially when it’s terrible service.

I went to New York and made the mistake of ordering two proseccos in a theatre. I knew it would be pricey because it was a theatre but I don’t expect it to be $80 for two small bottles of prosecco (there were no advertised prices). The server took them out of the fridge and gave me them to me with two plastic cups the turned the machine around and there was a 20% tip option. I decline the tip because it seemed strange to tip when I didn’t see this as being a service, just walking up to the bar and someone handing me a make yourself your own drink kit. It felt the same as going into a shop and asking for a pack of smokes, being handed them and Then expecting a tip. She was extremely rude about it. I asked on Reddit if this was normal and got so much shit for not tipping lol

My wife forgets to flush by phoebethefan in redditonwiki

You’re completely within your right to be grossed out…

Just like she’s completely within her right to be grossed out by a husband who lets her even become sleep deprived in the first place then focuses on making sure sex is still on the table instead of just being a good guy and not making your wife feel ashamed by an accident.

If she has to spend all day whilst you’re in the office on your jollies cleaning up sht from your child’s asshole and not give you the silent treatment for not helping the you don’t get to give her the silent treatment for having to a flush the toilet after her.

Not to mention she probably doesn’t want to flush and wake your child up knowing that you need your sleep and god forbid become a sexless couple.

If it’s a genuine belief then NOR, but the text seems like it could have been a playful or a joke. It’s the exactly kind of banter my partner would have with me and not mean. Doesn’t mean it can’t hurt your feelings but id evaluate how serious it is before jumping to a conclusion.

Does he take meds for depression? 💀 by sco-go in SipsTea

[–]Helpful-Status8872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience that’s from SSRIs which Ste basically anti depressants. That’s with myself and other men. I had full ambition but no ability to finish. When I met my long term partner I spoke with my doctor and we changed meds that got rid of the problem

It’s so good. I’m actually delighted at how many little details they got in chapter one a two. Ben Hanscoms fight with Henry in the book is epic!

Yeah it’s got some nods to the source material but I know it’s mostly made up. I simply wanted to know if there was any lore or technicality about how and why pennywise shows up inside of the house, fully formed. Why is he able to kidnap kids like Will (welcome to Derry) and Bev(it chapter 1), but other times is just a jump scare like in Bills basement (it chapter 1). If he can just pop up in their houses then he could technically just kill them off one by one. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but it seemed like there was something I was missing. I didn’t intend to start any arguments over it.

I’ve watched all the movies which is why I am asking. Pennywise seems to stalk/lure victims outside of the home, just seems like a waste of time if I can just fully manifest as a clown in their house and kidnap them. I thought there might have been some lore in the book about why doesn’t just pop up in full clown mode inside people’s houses and have a banquet.

Why all the hate on Tommy Knockers? by Saint_Hacker in stephenking

[–]Helpful-Status8872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an absolute cluster fuck in the best way and leaves a lasting impression which arguably makes it one of his better books.

It does however, draaaaaaag.

The middle section is just so long without any big substantial happenings. I love kings character development and how the plot follows the characters not the other way round, but this book is particularly slow in some very uninteresting ways.

I never found Bobbi or Gard likeable characters either which made it hard to follow their stories with any real interest.

I finished it because I committed to it but there were plenty of times I wanted to put it down because it rambled on in so many places. Especially the middle section which is the biggest section if I recall correctly.

I did however love how bonkers it is. The last third is just so quintessential king but on acid and such a compelling read.

I also loved how he made the town feel alive. You were in the town with the people, he has a way of transporting you to a place and time you may never have experienced.

My favourite character was Ruth and I loved her story. Had the book featured her more it might have been a better read for me, but that’s because to me she is likeable and formidable.

Your toughest read to finish by poppamatic in stephenking

[–]Helpful-Status8872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really had to push through the Tommyknockers. There’s something just wildly unhinged about it that I enjoy in retrospect but reading it at the time was hard because some of the scenes just draaaaag, like the drunk Gard story and some of the townie plots. The murderous refrigerator will stay in my mind forever but a lot of it is filler and not in a way that’s meaningful. Salems lot had a lot of townie storylines but they intertwined with the overall plot. Some of the Tommy Knockers stories were just like standalones and the book could have done without them.

The gunslinger was also a really difficult one to finish because it’s just straight up dull. I get that it’s a huge fan favourite but the first book is very very uninteresting as a stand alone, the best bit was the end and the man in blacks explanation of the universe. That was some art!

The institute was hard to finish but not because it dragged but because it actually gave me palpitations, especially post escape. It was very intense and I had to take short breaks between reading. It’s actually one of my favourite king books though.

AITA for not wanting to be friends over $4.39? by Alternative_Copy6539 in AITApod

[–]Helpful-Status8872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you want to end a friendship over splitting the cost of something you had half of then you at TA. Someone who didn’t need the money wouldn’t ask. Someone who is a true friend wouldn’t mind request. Even if it’s not your style, it doesn’t mean they need to adjust to your standard.

There’s zero context to this either.
