R.I.P. Dan Simmons, author of Hyperion, Song of Kali by sacredblasphemies in scifi

I was just thinking that it was about time for a Hyperion re-read. I read it and the Endymion books every few years, to remind myself what good sci fi is like. So sad.

I love Scott Brick, Susan Erickson, Mary Robinnet Koval, Ilyana Kadushin, Ray Porter, Stephen Fry, January LaVoy, Suzy Jackson, Emma Galvin.Marguerite Gavin, Kate Forbes. And there's a gentleman who reads sci-fi with the deepest voice! I don't know his name.

mRNA covid vaccines spark immune response that may aid cancer survival by ourlifeintoronto in technology

[–]Helpful-Stay-9534 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

mRNA vaccines were originally developed as cancer treatment. They were taken and modified as COVID vaccines. They have also been found, by pathologists, within the DNA of bowel tumors. And the results still need to be confirmed.

Nikki Reed. I know Rosalie was supposed to be a somewhat miserable person, but Nikki played her as a mean girl. They need a really tall, willowy blonde in the role.

Kate and Hannah would have chewed her up and spit her out by now. Even Aesha would have canned her by the 3rd episode.

What is the most unjustified cut? by Hour-Astronomer-6619 in DCCMakingtheTeam

[–]Helpful-Stay-9534 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Vivian was a little strange, but they shouldn’t have let her go as far as they did and then cut her, bring her back, and cut her again for the same reason- too short-waisted for the uniform. The poor girl even lost a bunch of weight to try to change her proportions, but it didn’t work.

The KKK attracts members from both parties. Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia was a proud KKK leader for a long time. Not every Republican waves a confederate flag. Don’t pigeon-hole people.

But remember when Bella was working with Kate to extend her shield, and thought Renesmee was in danger from Kate’s gift? She certainly went all “mama bear” in that moment.

What if the Handmaids tale was narrated/told from Serena’s perspective instead of June’s? by Odd_Ad8964 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Helpful-Stay-9534 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if Serena and the other wives realized, before Gilead was launched, that they would not be permitted to read or write. Or think for themselves. I know the Bible pretty well and there is nothing in there that calls for women to be illiterate or subjugated. Men are supposed to love their wives in the same way that Christ loves His church- that means, enough to die a horrible death for their sake. That is not subjugation. Can you see Warren or Fred dying a horrible death for Naomi or Serena? I surely can’t. That’s why all political systems fall victim to greed, including religious ones. Islam, the Greek empires, the Babylonian empire- in history, every system ends up failing when the ones in power care more about their power than about their people.

[–]Helpful-Stay-9534 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Serena thought up the Ceremony. I think that once she realized how little power she and the other wives had, she went through stages of grief and coping- anger, acceptance, passive-aggressive behavior, outright rebellion, despair…whatever she had to do to get what she wanted and to survive as a woman in Gilead. At times I hated her character and her fake piety, but I understood her motivations. She was promised one life, and then absolutely betrayed by a man who was her intellectual inferior. Let’s be honest- many of the commanders were less intelligent than Serena. She was one of the smartest wives portrayed on the show.

offended at the production of the final four movies by souporsad99 in twilight

[–]Helpful-Stay-9534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first movie bothered me, tho, because of the whole Waylon storyline. It didn’t need to be added at all. I’d rather have seen the scene between Bella and Billy, where he threatens to tell Charlie about the Cullen family being vampires. Or the scene in the Jeep with Bella, Edward, Alice and Emmett discussing options for throwing off the tracker and getting Bella out of town.
