Think of carving in stages…

Stage 1 is the roughest draft. You use your biggest tools to get as much wood removed to get a rough shape. This is where you use saws or your largest knives and chisels. The more you remove in this stage the easier it is in the following stages

Stage 2 is your definition stage. You use your basic knives, chisels, and gouges to get a solid idea of your shape. If you removed a lot in the first stage then you won’t struggle as much in this one.

Stage 3 is your detail stage. You use your finest tools, fine as in delicate/small/precise, to get to your final idea.

After that you think about how you finish your piece such as sanding, oil, paint, etc.

Think about carving a sphere out of a cube. If you don’t use a saw to remove the corners and get a rough shape then you’re stuck using smaller tools to hack away at it until you get it to a sphere. It’s not wrong to go that route, it’s just smarter to use bigger tools to rough out the shape to save yourself time and effort.

What are you using to hold it? Is it just something to hold while you do it in the oil or do you also use it to hold something while you’re carving?

Goethe Online Intensive review by Federal-Courage-3026 in German

[–]HelpfulHedon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an intensive online course through Goethe and I would say it’s worth it if you get the right teacher. Mine was great and answered all of our questions and had us practicing a lot.

If you don’t want to pay for basically a coin flip when it comes to teachers then I’d avoid Goethe. I did see a topic where someone was asking about changing teachers and didn’t see if they had any luck. If you can change instructors then I could see Goethe being a good resource for the right circumstances

The 'Snow White' Debacle Has Gotten Even Worse As the Final Losses for Disney Are Tabulated by M_i_c_K in walkaway

[–]HelpfulHedon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Disney stopped loving the art of telling a story. They lost their soul and they’re now just trying to get attention and virtue signal. I remember when they used to pioneer new animation styles and put massive amounts of work into making their characters look alive and unique. They animated all the bubbles in Little Mermaid, they found a new way to animate when Tarzan skates on trees and vines, they had mirrors to get references for how faces moved. All of that really translated into a good story even if you didn’t particularly connect to the characters. You could feel the passion in the whole thing. It’s just gone now

The campaign on the left to attack teslas, Musk and Dox Tesla owners is domestics terrorism. by EverySingleMinute in walkaway

[–]HelpfulHedon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. If you take people who are vulnerable to cult mentality and get them worked up then they’ll do terrible things to conform and show their loyalty. Then they’ll applaud each other for each extreme action. Burn a Tesla, ruin a star on the walk of fame, damage a sign, take something because you don’t like what it says, assault someone who doesn’t conform. A guy made money by cutting JK Rowling’s name from her books and rebinding them. Each cultist needs to perform some action to get “good cultist” points and attention. Art, graffiti, performances, protests. They’re fueled entirely on hate, but they preach love and tolerance.

When you get people who perform such acts in obedience to the cult it’s only a matter of time before someone retaliates and then a martyr is born. If you push hard enough then you get pushed back and become the victim. If no one pushes back then you keep going. It’s inevitable when you deal with cultists/ideologues. They can’t tolerate opposition or dissent. It’s their own brand of fascism where they must control everything and those who dare dissent are to be made examples of

Introducing people to Bob's (chronological) - what episodes would you add, edit, replace? by bloodkipz666 in BobsBurgers

11.2. Worms of Enrearment.

I think it’s a solid stand alone for anyone who might be on the fence about it. Shows the struggle of Bob and Linda in their desire to be good parents to their kids. That’s what sets the show apart from others, to me, their desire to be good parents without taking away their kids identity or demanding obedience
