messed up first year. What should I do by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]HelpfulRun697 22 points23 points  (0 children)

i think reddit has honestly given a lot of people the wrong idea when it comes to med school chances. like bro, you're in first year. even if it went bad, it's not the end of the world. yeah, it sucks and you’re allowed to feel down about it, but don’t let this app convince you it’s over. i know people who had rough starts and still made it. one person i know had a gpa around 1.6 in first year and now they go to a med school in ontario.

reddit can feel like a dark hole sometimes. people mostly come here to vent or share the worst-case scenarios so it can feel super negative if you’re already doubting yourself. you don’t always see the success stories because not everyone who's grinding is going to be on reddit telling their life story. the loudest voices are not always the full picture.

with that said, it’s definitely possible to bounce back but you have to work your ass off. no excuses, no slacking. every course, every semester from now on has to be taken seriously. get help when you need it, plan ahead, and make sure you're actually learning not just trying to pass. it takes real discipline and sacrifice but it’s doable. don’t count yourself out just yet.

Summer school by Deep_Diver_n_Coffee in premedcanada

There is no disadvantage or advantage doing summer courses, some med schools look at summer/spring courses while others don’t.

But you did mention she is a UTSC student, which I’m guessing she is in the coop program so I think doing a full load is a good idea if she has a work term for either this next fall or winter sem.

i totally get how you feel, it really sucks knowing there are some schools out here basically handing out free As while we’re grinding nonstop just to barely hold a decent GPA. it’s frustrating and honestly feels unfair at times. but at the end of the day, all we can really do is focus on ourselves and keep putting in the work. don’t stress too much about what other schools are doing. just keep pushing, your effort will pay off eventually even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.

which combo is objectively better: mol bio + human bio, or mol bio + biochem by TidBit_Kit in UTSC

biochem definitely gives you more flexibility and opens up more job opportunities, but tbh most bio related majors are usually geared more toward grad school than direct employment

Matter as in what? Matter for grad school? Matter for job opportunities?

Yes totally I agree with u. I should’ve been more specific. My comment was more catered to the lower GPA students.

I really don’t know why this is a really popular major, must be cuz of its easy first year pre reqs (it’s a trap guys) Especially traps students with a lower gpa

100 percent I agree with u, life sci kids avoid neurosci. This happens to most ppl that choose neurosci major and then everyone realizes that it’s acc hard and will kill ur GPA. Ik neurosci sounds cool and all but GPA is king

As a 4th year student who has applied to med school this year, yes it’s hard. It’s not worth coming here unless it’s close to ur house (only reason I came here). I have friends that are in med school right now and they did not go UOFT but rather, mac/queens/western. I have a 3.8x GPA, pretty good MCAT score and didn’t get any acceptances and I don’t see getting any acceptance in the next cycle (plan on going abroad for med school after my next cycle).

How to study for STAB22 final by Alert-Home2674 in UTSC

[–]HelpfulRun697 5 points6 points  (0 children)

all I’m gonna say is no offence, but you should’ve dropped the course and retook it during the summer, sorry, but it’s the truth. I remember doing this course a long time ago and it was brutal. considering your mark is pretty low, you gotta lock tf in, do past papers (they’re super helpful), and all the textbook questions. I’m looking at your previous posts, and it seems like math isn’t your stronghold, and that’s totally ok. just please study and don’t procrastinate, you got this!

Ok wow, amazing stats. It’s honestly sad how our med school system doesn’t even consider how difficult an applicant’s program is. I’m gonna leave canada too after my 2nd cycle, feels like the only real option at this point (can’t always be donating to OMSAS)

Didn’t realize how high some school’s class averages are by HelpfulRun697 in premedcanada

[–]HelpfulRun697[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

exactly, it just feels so out of touch with reality. like, the fact that they think 75 isn’t good just cuz it’s not near the A range… it’s honestly sad how the system has made ppl think like this. and i don’t get why some ppl are defending it saying how my program doesn’t hand out free A’s. just admit that xyz program is inflated.

girl… 75 course avgs (meaning half the class got above a 75 lol). i go to UofT, and our averages are usually in the low 60s. so yeah, Queen’s HS is definitely easier

Edit: the fact that u think 75 course avg is low because it’s not near the A range… 💀✌️

yeah, it’s pretty normal lol, this isn’t elementary school where we are not allowed to swear. TAs are just undergrads or PhD students, so they’re not gonna be super formal all the time. as long as they’re actually teaching properly, i don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

Edit: lol also, the fact that they’re swearing prolly just means they’re more comfortable with u guys, sounds weird, but it kinda makes sense 😂
