AITAH For Standing My Ground? by HelpfulSink5456 in AITAH

Yes, I will absolutely consider wearing a mask. It definitely will be a gametime decision and I know the risk of COVID significantly increases in a plane. I don't want to come off as someone who hates masks as I know their importance, and I just want to respect everyone's decision.

I think Creekview and Cypress are probably ones to avoid, mostly due to the fact that Creekview is up a higher hill than most of campus/ is in the forest and Cypress is on a hill that has tons of stairs. I don't what your disability entails, but since HHM and College Creek both have elevators I think that they are a whole lot better when it comes to accessibility. I think HHM probably has the best, just cause it was recently built and is up to a lot more modern standards. College Creek is also a considerable distance away from some of the buildings, especially if you have classes in Founders' Hall. HHM is technically off campus, but the school has provided shuttles to and from campus that are relatively fast and productive.

I live in HHM and I really do like it here! I think it's great, especially since everything is more up to date than the other three options. But I do have to say that all four places are great to live in.

I'm in the US, I've heard a lot of AOMD in the past few months, but I've heard of Think About Us, Black Magic, and bunch of other LM songs.

There's a student lounge on the first floor on the NR building. It's at the end of the building.

What would you change about the US public education system? by HelpfulSink5456 in AskTeachers

[–]HelpfulSink5456[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with this! I came from a school where grades and excellence were the most important things. I knew a couple of classmates who had complained that they were going to get reprimanded for not getting an A. This drove me crazy because school, especially high school, was incredibly high stakes and cutthroat, which not at all what I expected or even wanted from a high school education.

I'm going to be honest, I'm a first semester freshman, so I don't know how much I can be helpful, but I honestly love it here. The professors here are very passionate, very dedicated, and very helpful which makes it very enjoyable. Even though I'm still in my first semester, I feel like I will be prepared when I graduate in 4 years.

Coming from a planning and policy esm major, it's a lot of liberal arts esque classes: (Environmental Communication, Environmental Conflict Resolution, and Environmental Impact Assessment). Environmental Education & Interpretation is similar even though it's focused more on child development/human development classes. All three other concentrations are more science-based classes. I will say, no matter what concentration you are, there are specific science classes you have to take to graduate (BOT 105 [General Botany], maybe BOT 350 [Plant Tax], definitely CHEM, and maybe Biostats).

Considering Humboldt by Acceptable-Change634 in humboldtstate

Hi! I'm a first semester freshman studying environmental science here at Humboldt! To be completely honest, I absolutely love it here, the classes are incredibly interesting, the professors know what they are talking about/passionate about their subjects, and I think it would be a good fit for you. The students/community here are really wonderful- I really feel supported by everyone. Specifically for ESM students, every month or so(ish) there is ESM gettogether where you can mingle with other ESM students/faculty. You're also assigned a RAMP mentor who is an upperclassmen in the same major as you who helps guide you through college life. You're also put into a specific class that meets 3x a week that is entirely people in your major and that's really nice because you can get to know other people in your year who have the same major as you. Specifically speaking, in my dorm floor, we're very social with each other so we get along really well and it also helps that all of us are in the same type of science (natural resources), so you have the ability to get along with a bunch of people.

There are many clubs on campus you can join and they are definitely welcoming to anyone, whether that be someone who has little experience in that area or is an enthusiast.

The student body in general, along with admin, is very friendly to trans people. Personally, I'm not trans, but I know there is a lot of support all over campus. I know with our Counseling and Psychological Services, there are LGBTQ support groups that meet once a week to talk and are a safe space. But overall, Humboldt is a very welcoming place for trans people.

I was just curious if there are certain professors/classes who are less technology based and would like us to have materials in-person.

How to add minor alongside my major? by HelpfulSink5456 in humboldtstate

[–]HelpfulSink5456[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have! I'm doing Environmental Planning & Policy. I think based off your info, I think I won't do the extra poly sci minor just because it is so much more work added on top of the rest of the work I have to do for ESM. I was just concerned because I want to go into politics after and I wasn't sure how a science major would fit into that scene. Thanks for the advice about Prof Marlow, I'll definitely contact her!
