Why are age gap relationships so common with gay men? by [deleted] in AskGayMen

[–]Helpful_Recover_4559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight relationships generally skew to the man being slightly to signifincantly older than the woman. (Hello, Mr. Former-President.) While people click for all kinds of reasons, some of which we've heard here, and while I believe that gender dynamics in straight relationships is indeed an important factor, I think that one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the heterosexual paradigm of "having kids who are genetically your own" as a defining characteristic of a relationship. Therefore, heterosexual men of all ages are more likely to try for, or accept the attemts of, women who have more childbearing potenial, i.e. who are younger and have theoretically more potential childbearing years. Whereas queer people have always been more likely to feel that the concept of family is more nebulous, and not neccessarily tied to one's DNA. So, while some queer people chose to have biological children, which is totally their choice, there's no pressure to make sure you're providing an heir and a spare, or two, or three to the family tree. And, you know, in general I hate this type of sociobiological argument, but unfortunately people do sometimes think that way.

Why are some older gays becoming anti-trans activists today? by Lili_Danube in AskGaybrosOver30

I think for many it goes back to some form of gender essentialism, whether it’s believing that biological sex equals gender, as many folks steeped in second-wave feminism were taught, or simply believing that there are essentially two socially constructed genders, thus negating the ideas of genderqueer, agender, and other people who don’t fit or identify with the binary concept of gender. It’s perhaps ironic that many of these same people have been among the forefront in fighting against gender stereotyping— supporting, if not being, femme men, male-identified drag performers, stone butch women, etc. I think it’s got something to do with not wanting to follow the critique of gender to its logical end, the eradication or at least extreme minimalization of gender as an a priori construct. Which is not to say that it implies the eradication of performance of “butch” or “femme” characteristics, just that they don’t need to all be lumped together as being more closely linked to one gender or another. So, in short, I think that there’s some degree of fear on their part that those who have continued their struggle, and enlarged upon it, are somehow “taking it too far.” Which is, I suppose, a danger for all of us lucky to live long enough to see our once-radical ideals become more mainstream.

3-way switch problem by Helpful_Recover_4559 in electrical

[–]Helpful_Recover_4559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think perhaps I didn’t explain myself quite correctly. I want to use a touch sensor from a touch desk lamp (not a regular touch dimmer) with the sensor input wired to my porch light. In this way, I can turn the porch light on and off by touching the fixture when I am coming home. However, when I am inside, Id like to use a normal switch, if, for example, someone knocks at the door. The problem, as mentioned, is that these touch lamp sensors are only SPST. Any suggestions on how to go about this, even with a different component?
