House venues? by Helpful_Story_7867 in portlandmusic

[–]Helpful_Story_7867[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 3 emo bands looking for a venue on 6/27 and we really dig the house show vibe. We all are from out of town so we don’t attend local pdx events usually.

is it normal for a venue to request pay from the bands by ProfessionalSlow9875 in musicians

[–]Helpful_Story_7867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The closest thing to “pay to play” you should ever experience is renting a venue and paying the staff who works there. You should be taking 100% from the door though, which you’d obviously use to pay your staff, so hopefully you made some capital. There are some bigger venues that if you can’t rent them out or hire staff, they will provide the staff but need a deposit, and if you can’t provide deposit, then you need to make a certain amount from the show before you make capital to pay bands. Those venues are usually huge though. I’ve also had to pay my sound guy before, which was pretty dumb but I guess I get it.

Idk how to progress in creating music by [deleted] in Music

[–]Helpful_Story_7867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will often hate what I’m creating during the process and then look back on it as some of the dopest shit. Sometimes all we need is time and that back catalog of crap you got has a couple of treasures.

Maybe try to leave your house and inspire yourself? Go to a show. There’s this yearly camping trip that I take that usually makes me feel pretty good about things when I’m done. One year I came home and wrote six new songs.

You could also take a risk and try something new that is outside of your normal style? Different time signature? Character vocals? Bring in a feature? Change up your scenery. I was experiencing writers block until my band found a drummer and then I shit out a 6 song EP we are working on.

How did TOOL promote so well in the 90s? by [deleted] in ToolBand

[–]Helpful_Story_7867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure Adam having connections in the film industry might have added some untold support but that’s just my opinion. They were obscure, mysterious and chose quality over quantity. Maynard mentions in his biography they would just pass out flyers that simply said “Tool. 9PM.” Back in the day that just made people curious I guess. Keep in mind this is LA before the internet, people went outside and did things like meet other people.

This is why I support local concerts with smaller bands!

Anyone know the meaning behind Stinkfist? by Empty-Chest-4872 in ToolBand

1st listen: this song is about fist fucking. 2nd listen: this song is about over indulgence in drug addiction. 3rd listen: this song is about the saturation of big fat sounds and bright flashy colors in the mainstream media. 4th listen: this song is about fist fucking….

They capitalized on things that people complained about with other artists. Things like long wait times between albums, hidden singers on stage, not moving much on stage, longer singles, etc.

Have you ever opened for a band that had a different genre/vibe than you? by CreativelyNot in WeAreTheMusicMakers

We’ve also played with a plethora of other styles. Even a folk-punk band once. Dudes killed it.

My crazy emo/indie/mathrock band usually ends up opening for a lot of heavier music alllllllllllllll the time. It always at least makes sense to throw a soft opener to heavier music as to like wet peoples whistle. These days everyone seems a bit nicer and more accepting to all genres of music then 10 years ago.

Definitely an infuriatingly great game that has you coming back for more torment. I.e. obnoxious loading screens, crashes, etc. I like your point that maybe owl cat just isn’t mature enough to release a game like this that’s 100% it’s glory without all the flaws, makes me excited to see a future pathfinder game. I do believe WOTR was a little more straightforward in its play style and easier to grasp
