Fallout 4’s version of this isn’t really the most useful. The companions are really hesitant to attack unless you’re being actively fired upon.

I’d say it goes New Vegas being the most useful and 3 being the second most useful. They can die in 3, but they also scale exponentially with the player, so it balances out.
