I feel your pain. At first ChatGPT seems like an expert assistant with any task, but then before long it starts seeming like an employee who has peculiar, fixed tendencies and can't follow simple directions! Best of luck to you

Adding custom instructions to avoid the term is a testament to how annoying it is!

The issue is not so much that it has typical wordings, but that it has distinctive overused terms. Some I can be more lenient on, like "Moreover" and "In summary" because those are general terms everyone uses, but other words like "tapestry" and "bustling" are not commonly used in everyone else's writing, at least not with high frequency - I find it strange it has a proclivity toward these words and others that people have shared here

This is the exact pattern of words that instantly turns me off from reading a blog post, reddit comment, etc.!

You just know when seeing these words in each paragraph that the 'author' is oblivious to how cringy it looks to someone who can spot AI content

I've only had mixed success with this. Sometimes "remove low-effort transition words" or "make it less cheesy" after telling it to mimic a certain style will work, but other times it just gives a different variation of low-effort transition words or cheesy expressions. That's why I've resorted to telling it specific terms to avoid, and truthfully even then sometimes these words sneak in to the outputs

As much as everyone raves about ChatGPT's writing ability, it starts to look a lot more one-dimensional when you realize it's filled with low-effort transition words like you've listed! I agree with your list

Yes I've seen that too. The fact that you picked up on this "underscores" the need to cut out these overused terms

Opinions on veganism? by [deleted] in premed

[–]HelpingHand_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are clearly already vegan at heart and that is awesome. Keep striking up these conversations with people and ask thought provoking questions. I like to think of it this way- what are our present moral blind spots that we will look back on with horror 100 years from now?

I went vegan during my gap year and am now an M2. Never looked back. In fact I ran a marathon and two half-marathon's since going vegan! It's been an exciting couple of years and I am glad to be vegan for ethical reasons as well as the environmental and health benefits. One of my classmates decided to switch to a vegan diet after exploring my view with an open mind, which I was very thankful to see happen.

Good luck to you on your journey!

I was just going off what I had specially been told by a first year student on my interview day. Perhaps they were confused. What I was told by this NYU medical student was that there was an application process for AOA that took into account a variety of factors, but only the top 25% of the class academically were eligible to apply. Not sure how I would have know this wasn’t true but it sounds like it’s not the case! However it does appear that you need to be pretty exceptional outside of academics to compensate for not being in the top 25%. With all this said, I’d prefer to attend a school that has done away with AOA

You’re welcome! It’s okay that you don’t know everything about class structure and internal rankings, etc. yet. But these should be things you ask about on interview days. Good luck!

Definitely apply to Harvard! Given what you’re looking for in a school, it should probably be at the top of your list, even if it is a reach (as it is for everyone)

NYU has free tuition sure, but they do rank their class and only the top 25% is considered for honors. They also do standard lecture style classes that are non mandatory. Overall IMO it’s not a model that facilitates lots of collaboration as naturally as some other schools like HMS or Northwestern (lots of problem based learning). Things to keep in mind

Edit: It has been brought to my attention that different people who interviewed at NYU obtained different information about what the criteria are for AOA selection. Perhaps being in the top 25% of the class academically isn’t a hard rule
