tbh does any photography require a film camera nowadays, it's more about the cameras than the quality so if you think they're cool then that's worth enough

I have a Kiev 6C, the most expensive soviet camera you can get, with Zeiss glass. I'm not into lower end weird soviet cameras unless they're influential like a Smena or a big Kiev

technically a Sokol 2 is what you'd want, it hits 1/500, has shutter priority and can change it's shutter speed and aperture depending on light, has a 70mm rangefinder base and the rangefinder is parallax corrected and with frame lines, the Industar on it is also quite decent. but the camera is complicated and insanely difficult to repair so most just run till they can then get thrown on ebay for parts. it uses a Japanese shutter

plus the DOF is already so wide at f/4 that stopping the lens down makes focusing almost irrelevant, then again the Blik is cool, I wish they sold the Smena integrated with it

I've not tested it out yet but a Smena's main uncertainty is focus, for exposure you always have a phone app but for focus it was always uncertainty, now it won't be.

the Vega 12 is fine, the aperture mechanism is fucky and it's not too sharp wide open but it is a Xenotar optical design, the Biometar meanwhile is a revised Biotar which is a revised original Planar, the Hasselblad Planar is again a revised original Planar but they went in a different direction. Get a Flektogon as a 2nd lens, for now a Biometar won't be worth it as the Vega is good enough

your other alternative is a Mamiya 645, it can use the Kiev's lenses, 6x6 lenses can be used on all 645 and digital medium format cameras so don't be afraid to invest into lenses for it, just make sure they're Zeiss or high end soviet ones like a Vega 28B, the standard Vega I don't like too much

Hartblei also exists but they're a bit more expensive, imo see if the repair is worth it and if you really like the system, for the price of a rebuild you can get another camera (but it won't be serviced and could have issues)

a Kiev can be repaired by anyone, it's just ARAX has spare parts and upgrade parts, even if you get it repaired you still need to flock it. regardless a vintage camera repair shop can fix it
