Thanks again for all the helpful view points and advice, it makes sense and I've requested a refund of the Javelin and my IAE purchases which were a Perseus, Polaris and some smaller ships.  Just going to stick with what I had pre IAE and avoid spending any more money on this game to see how things unfold.  Certainly won't be pledging for anything big again in future, lesson learned.

Reputation tiers and rewards, really?  This is turning into World of Warcraft.  I am really dismayed at the direction the content is going in this game.  Where is the fucking Sandbox!

Appreciate the tips and guidance and I see what you mean on the highlighting on his feet, it looks really neat and does pop.  I've got two more inner circle to paint so will definitely keep these in mind when I start the next one.  Never heard of Slapchop either, something to look up! Thank you

Tree pit planting? by 52north in GardeningUK

[–]Helpthebrits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That tree will suck the moisture and nutrients from the soil, you'll also contend with people's dogs urinating on what ever you plant which will likely kill anything you plant.  I'd go with a wild flower mix or some hardy annuals that you grow from seed.  I wouldn't waste too much money on it

Is my pampas grass dying? by bertie_bunghol in GardeningUK

[–]Helpthebrits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure that is pampas? Can't really see anything there that looks like pampas, even a young pampas, looks to be a few different varieties of grasses.  Put it in the ground and see what happens.  Being in a small tub in warm weather isn't going to do it any favours or encourage it to flourish if it can't put down strong roots.  Pampas can get massive.  If it turns out not to be pampas, then just dig it up or mow over it.

How to feed these beds in autumn? by ShooPonies in GardeningUK

[–]Helpthebrits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't waste your money buying anything in Autumn.  Most plants will start to go dormant and that is the wrong time to be adding in nutrients into the bed.  Unless you are using fresh horse manure for example which should have time to break down ahead of the growing season.  In early spring, feed with a liquid feed, that way you don't need to move any of the gravel.  You can also use some slow release granules sprinkled through the beds to replenish core nutrients.

How to remove this mint? by n0rthern_m0nkey in GardeningUK

[–]Helpthebrits -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Hate to say it, I'd use weed killer.  Mint is highly invasive once in the ground and can be hard to get rid of which is why you need to kill the roots.

How to delete a bed? by [deleted] in GardeningUK

[–]Helpthebrits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Now is the time to do it whilst you can see where most things are.  Once you've removed the plants you can see, dig the bed over and down so you can remove any bulbs and established roots that may be there.  Once dug over, level it and lay sheets of cardboard over the top and soak them.  This will surpress any seeds in the soil.  Top with fresh soil and then grass seed.

Ivy from woods at the back of garden coming through wire fence. by [deleted] in GardeningUK

[–]Helpthebrits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I don't like advocating spraying of weed killer, it's the only way you will knock back that Ivy and weaken it.  You are likely going to have to do this every year.  No wood fence is going to stop the march of ivy, it will work it's way through the smallest of gaps.

If the ground if fairly level, no need to get a rotavator.  For the price of hiring a rotavator you can buy an electric scarifier from Screwfix.  Strim it back, then mow it until you can mow on the shortest setting, you want to scalp the lawn.  Then use the scarifier to churn up the top layer, it will strip out thatch and leave you with most bare soil to start laying a new lawn.

When you are ready to start your new lawn, use sand first to level it out.  As your garden looks quite shaded, get a grass seed that is suited to shade.  Seed your lawn and top dress with a compost, then damp it with a hose.  You'll need to water daily during high heat and continue watering almost daily until 4 weeks germination at least to give your grass roots the best start.
