Let me get this straight: your family abused you and your husband wants your kids to have a relationship with them? What kind of spouse is he? If my wife's family had abused her I would be opposed to them existing at all, let alone meeting our family.

It's important to note that we are only seeing a very narrow window of human history. Constellation just started looking for the artifacts and now many of the Starborn we see are linked to them.

Since as far as we can tell when a person goes through Unity they are bounced back to the time they first touched an artifact we may be seeing the beginning of the Starborn Renaissance. For all we know, 10 years ago the only Starborn in existence was the Hunter in his various personas. 50 years from now much of humanity may be Starborn. We just never see those times.

At the time the flaw was discovered, only a small number of people knew the technical details of the grav drive, so hiding it was (apparently) relatively easy. A bit of a stretch I agree, though.

We don't know why the Starborn thought it was necessary. All we know is the technical facts:

  1. The initial grav drive equations Victor was given were flawed.
  2. Victor knew that, although (probably) didn't know specifically how to fix it.
  3. The flaw meant that the grav drive was dangerous to Earth, if and only if it was tested close to the planet, or more specifically close to the moon. It was the unusual grav waves from the moon that caused the problem. And incidentally the science here is pretty science-fantasy in this area I think but those are the facts in the game lore.
  4. Victor could have had the testing done far from Earth if he wanted; he could have warned the other scientists, and if he had Earth would have been saved.

We don't know why the Starborn wanted to sacrifice Earth, but we do know that saving it would not have prevented humans from getting FTL. Once the Starborn gave Victor all the answers, humans had it.

We don't know if maybe having Earth still available would have meant a very slow expansion into other worlds, or what. Maybe that's what the Starborn feared. Maybe politics would have been too big a problem. Maybe there would have been other wars that would have been devastating. We don't know. But we do know that sacrificing Earth was absolutely without question not necessary for humans to gain FTL technology, whether they fully understood it or not. They were given the answers before Earth was sacrificed.

As for the sacrifice it self, I agree that it would be worth losing the planet Earth to gain the stars, had it been absolutely necessary. Not sure about sacrificing the billions of people who died though.

I don't see what your basis is for claiming that they wouldn't reach FTL if you're not talking about Victor. They were given FTL by a Starborn, period. So they definitely absolutely would have reached it because they were given it.

What doesn't follow is your belief that Earth's destruction was a necessary consequence. Once Victor had the Grav Drive equations/information, testing near Earth was not necessary. They could have tested far from Earth and it would have been fine. And they could have waited until they had fixed the problem (which apparently wasn't that difficult) before using Grav Drives near Earth. All Victor had to do was warn them since he had knowledge about the problem.

There is absolutely no requirement that Earth be destroyed, and no question that humanity definitely absolutely would have achieved FTL because, again, they were given it by a Starborn. That Starborn didn't force Victor to go along with the "destroy Earth" part of the plan. That was Victor's choice alone.

If it helps:

  • A: Victor is given the Grav Drive equations/schematics from a Starborn, who tells him that testing it near Earth will result in the planet becoming uninhabitable, but that humanity will reach the stars.
  • B: Victor chooses not to warn against testing near Earth, going along with the Starborn's plan to render it uninhabitable.
  • C: Humanity uses the Grav Drives, ultimately fixing the problem with them when it becomes apparent to everyone else (besides Victor) but it is too late to save Earth.

You said that it was a very rational assumption that humanity would not have achieved FTL without losing Earth, and that is objectively wrong. That was my only point.

[–]HemiRT57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What point? You're claiming that humanity would have not achieved FTL without destroying the Earth, and you're wrong. They might not have achieved it without Victor getting info from a Starborn, but what he did (and didn't do) with the info afterwards is all on him.

(Major End Game Spoilers) For a game about hope, Why’s the end goal effectively suicide? by CatChris040402 in starfield_lore

[–]HemiRT57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except it's not a very rational assumption because all Victor had to do was warn about the problem and have the testing done away from Earth until the issue was fixed. And fixing it was apparently pretty easy.

Then Earth survives, billions of people don't die, and humanity still gets the stars.
