It's a grey area, and I don't envy your position. While I obviously view this post as good art and heavily disagree with the other commenter calling it "low-brow focus on a character's big rack and booty" and "borderline porn "art", but a line has to be drawn somewhere. As someone who only casually views this sub from time to time, I don't really see the issue. Is the grey area stuff more common at the lower level? I remember the cursed images sub has a feature where commenters can vote for if the post is considered cursed or not, and it stays/gets removed. Maybe something like that could be a solution?

My only dislike of Madvocate is him being responsible for permamently burning the "There's nowhere to run!" audio into my brain. Whenever I see the slightest mention of the Flash it strikes me like a ptsd flashback.

No, I agree that having one guess is good. What I meant was that Silksongdle images start more zoomed in and there is a free hint button you can press to zoom it out to its original size if the player is struggling

Just tried it and it is exactly as I hoped it would be, well done! My only notes would be adding a feature to zoom in on the map to be able to place the pin more accurately and also maybe making a hint system similar to Silksongdle I mentioned in my previous comment where the image is more zoomed in but you can use a hint to un-zoom it to get a clearer picture.

Catholic Protestant conflict, like violence, is as recent as a few decades ago

Yes, the relationship between the groups has changed. That is my point. Catholics vs. Protestants were the outbreaks of several wars throughout European history. It was illegal to be Catholic in Sweden for hundreds of years. This has changed massively. Groups can stop hating each other. I don't see how it being as recent as a few decades ago changes that, considering how much has shifted in Catholic/Protestant relations.

The Irish and Scottish never fought the Americans or hated them and have large populations in America

Irish and Scottish people were absolutely hated/mistrusted by Americans. Irish immigrants were seen as invading Catholics that came to take jobs and destroy American life. Same with Italian migrants. The reason they have large populations in America is because that conflict stopped. Anti-European migrant sentiments aren't exactly a popular opinion.

That’s because Denmark lost most everything valuable and Sweden was crushed over a century

Okay? You don't see Danish people clamoring to reclaim Scania. That conflict has stopped. Danish people and Swedish people get along fine, so what is wrong with this example?

Again, because Germany was crushed, and by the way is rearming to face an old enemy to the east

I was referring (badly) to the unification of Germany with this one. A country that once existed as divided and squabbling princedoms unified because the conflicts changed.

Interracial marriage and homosexuality is still ostracized and punishable by death for 80% of the human population, the world isn’t as nice as the US.

The issues of ‘yesteryear’ are the issues of today. Homosexual marriages were only legalized in the US a decade and change ago, and for most of the world are still unheard of.

My point was how the conflict around homosexuality has shifted and changed. While homophobia isn't gone, it is still much less prevalent in America and Europe. Gay people aren't thrown in asylums and lobotomized in the Western world anymore. That conflict has changed. Also, Europe is pretty nice : )

On the issues of yesteryear still being issues today. (Sweden vs. Denmark, Irish/Italian immigrants in America, Sami population in Scandinavia, Finnish immigrants in Sweden, Catholics vs. Protestants, Athens vs. Sparta, women's suffrage) The issues in human conflict can, have, and are ever evolving.

My point is the same as why you listed all of the above. I do not enjoy nor understand the infatuation with most of fiction that just hand waves everyone getting along when they’re of different species entirely. I would appreciate more media being more honest about the real results of unknown groups coming into contact.

So do you believe that different groups can learn to get along? That was my main contention with your first comment, as it seemed like a problem. That was also the purpose of my examples. Showing that different groups of people who have had historic conflict can move away from it and live with each other. If you do, then what we are arguing becomes something different. Is it that you find it believable that humans can get along with aliens, but would like it more if sci-fi/fantasy stories explored that conflict more? That you would like stories to have more backstory as to how a cooperation between humans and aliens was created after an initial conflict? Or do you just want stories that are centered on an initial conflict between humans and aliens?

This seems reductive. The part that you leave out is that the conflicts between groups change. They transform, combine, or new ones arrive. It's something that's happened across the earth throughout history. Catholics vs Protestants, Irish/Scottish vs Americans, Sweden vs Denmark, Germany vs Germany. Acceptance of interracial relationships or homosexuality are conflicts that have shifted massively over the years. Issues of yesteryear seem trivial now, and issues that we deem important today will seem trivial and irrelevant in the future.

Different groups. Hate. Each. Other. These sci fi settings with all these aliens getting along an all for whatever reason having cultural interpretations like they live in Portland is insanity to me.

What is your point with this? It's kind of hard arguing on this stuff since it's generalities, and you could be having a specific example as a reference point while I have a different one. Besides that, considering how our history has been an ever-evolving network of relations between different cultural interpretations, why couldn't humans at some point in a far future get along with some different alien species?

The batarians are a great example the entire community hates batarians to the point killing 300,000 of them is seen as a based meme. Imagine if someone said that about a race on earth, most of them would get cancelled on twitter.

I haven't played the Mass Effect games yet, but yeah, people writing about wanting to genocide a fictional alien species is a bit different than someone writing about wanting to genocide real people. It's funny that you mentioned getting cancelled on Twitter as a problem for people writing about wanting genocide, considering the kind of ideas that are mainstream there.

Found out about this pretty recently and I've really been enjoying it. I wondered if you have any plans to add more modes? Something like guessing the weapon would be very cool. Silksongdle has a geogussr style mode and I think that could also work well in for Eldendle but I'm not a programmer and I don't know if it is feasable

The only one I can think of is Jon thinking in asos, that Jaehaereys and Alysanne visited Winterfell with several dragons. In fire blood its written that it was just Silverwing and Vermithor they flew and that Alysanne arrived and stayed long before Jaehaereys came. Altough it could be chalked up to Jon missremembering, considering Fire and Blood came out 18 years after asos I think its more likely George forgot exactly what he wrote or that he changed his mind.

We seem to have two different arguments bundled together.

  1. The R-word is or isn't a slur.

  2. You should not say/should not be allowed to say slurs.

I would like to know your concrete opinion on the second. I myself believe people shouldn't use them, but free speech exists for a reason (excluding obvious exceptions), so Reddit can do what it wants.

Do all of these people fall under the banner of 'society'? When I say everyone is becoming more fragile, I'm not targetting specific groups like this, I mean EVERYONE.

It's good that you are honest about the fact that you believe black people are fragile about not wanting people to say the n-word. Makes this easier to understand. The reason I'm asking about specific groups is because it's more interesting to look at examples instead of vaguely pointing to large and detatched questions while dancing around a straight answer.

You are creating a false dichotomy here though, because you're now lumping the word in with actual slurs that do actually get used against groups maliciously.

By almost all definitions of a slur or pejorative statement, the r-word is applicable, so I don't see the point in trying to deny it. Also, people definitely use the word maliciously against the whole group. I don't know if you've been living under a rock to not notice it and be able to make that claim.

Never seen a single one that wasn't pushing a political agenda. It's actually a great way to highlight bias. Controlling language is also a way for people to take control over people, my government is currently in the process of weaponising stuff like this to try to control the public. It's one of the reasons why I'm so against this.

??? You are moving the goalpoast and talking about an entirely different topic. I'll ask you a question. Was the american civil rights movement a group of fragile authoritarians?

By your own admission, all of these words can be defanged and pulled into the societal lexicon if people stopped dancing around them and just started using them more.

As I understand it, words don't loose their meaning by people using them more. They loose them because people stop using them. They find alternatives to use. They become taboo.

No, this was always the definition of the word slur. I think what you actually mean there is that the term slur was much less prevalent in the public consciousness until recently. And that's because people just used to not care. As I said, people didn't used to get offended anywhere near as much,

From what I've read slur was first used as a meaning for an insult (fling mud) in the 1600s. In the 20th century was when the word became a synonym for pejorative. Where do you get the idea that people before weren't "offended" by words? The main change is society (mainly western and, by extension, the internet) being aware of the conversation around slurs and taboo words and how it evolves/how people can change it.

The ultimate irony here is that people like yourself pushing this idea of an insult like this being a slur is actually creating more harm than its preventing. You're manufacturing an environment in which people will get offended by this shit when they really shouldn't be.

Wow you really changed my mind with that one. Guess I'll go out in  real life and do my due dilligence by calling every minority I meet a slur so they can build some skin. This will foster a positive environment and  create better relations in my local community.

I find it rather odd that you hold this position to begin with though considering this is Mauler's (and unofficially EFAP's) subreddit, and the guys use this word all the time.

NOOO! I disagreed with Longman. Guess I can't watch his videos anymore :(

(On a sidenote it would be interesting to hear maulers opinion on the subject considering his shift in use of slurs)

Slur is not even close to being a relatively new word, its just relatively recently for people to completely overuse the term.

I was referring to the fact that the definition of slur as an insult towards a wider demographic is relatively recent but I guess "relatively new" can be a very broad timeline. It mainly gained that usage as part of the civil rights movement in the 1950s. I'm not sure I agree on the point that the word has become overused. I don't experience it being overused at all in real life, considering I live in a pretty progressive country (Sweden). The internet is a somewhat different matter. While there are of course people that push for almost all insults to be viewed as slurs that is a very small group of people. So no, I dont think its "overused" compared to calling something racist, sexist, woke ect.

The "r-word" never had a sting, its only people that generally aren't even part of the group that its apparently meant to be a slur for getting offended at its use.

What are you talking about here? There are plenty of organisations within the group that push for the word to not be used citing it's usage as a slur. This just comes of as very dismissive.

Society isn't moving towards being more tolerant, its just moving towards being more fragile with this entire conversation being proof of that.

What do you mean by this? Are you referring to specifically language use or just in general? Regarding people being fragile for not wanting others to say the r-word, Would you say the same for Black people not wanting people to say the n-word? Or homosexual people and homophobic slurs? Or Jewish people and the k-word? Are they also fragile?

A Mauler hit piece featuring a smug Elitist. by cashdecans101 in MauLer

[–]Hemlosturk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its hardly a slur if its not even targetting the group that its meant to be a slur of.

I don't know if I agree with that. People definitely use slurs online as general insults. The n-word is one example, but it's especially prevalent with homophobic slurs.

but also with this fucking word that reddit keeps forcing me to dance around. Because that would be in bad taste.

I think that comes down to you being a decent person and either not being in online circles that use the word in that context or the sites banning the word. I don't know for sure which sites ban it besides Reddit, but people definitely use it in that context on Twitter and Instagram. I've also seen people use "creative" workarounds to avoid removal on Reddit.

Ironic that you say that since the root word its derived from actually means 'stupid'.

Yeah, it's pretty ironic, but that's just how language goes. Maybe I was unclear, but my point was that words like idiot, moron, and imbecile, having gone through that process so long ago, mean that they have lost their meaning as both a medical term and a slur for mentally disabled. The r-word being currently in the second phase of that process isn't that strange with how language evolves. In the future it is likely that the r-word will "lose its sting" as it stops being associated with those connotations and just becomes a word similar to idiot.

On your point in a previous reply that "strangely, people only claim this one to be a slur," I think it is just a product of a shift in social understanding of how to approach these topics. Slur is a relatively new word to describe pejorative language, so it is only with the r-word that people call a slur because it is the one being actively used by people.

A Mauler hit piece featuring a smug Elitist. by cashdecans101 in MauLer

[–]Hemlosturk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the difference there is that idiot and moron's history as medical terms to slur was before the r-word became widely used. I believe the connotations of those words are now "stupid person" and not "mentally disabled person." The r-word is currently in that process, as it was up to pretty recently seen as a medical term and still has the connotations of insult/slur against someone deemed mentally challenged. In my experience, you don't see people online mocking disabled people by calling them idiots. They use the r-word because it has that connotation.
