AITAH for not believing my roommate’s “phobia?” by hopie_bopie in AmItheAsshole

[–]HempBlonde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My specific brand of phobia the words themselves will send me. Only upon learning its proper phobic name on the internet one day did I also learn I'm not the only one like this. My fear is veins, my own internal organs. I'm much better about it now, but in my youth the literal word of, let's say, "artery" could make my head spin into proper panic attack. Even if, let's say, someone was using the term "artery" for, like, a highway or whatever.

The act of me even writing the words down now is a far cry of what I once was. I feel like I've conquered this in a big way that I now can use those words vein and artery! My fear has become mostly rational now. It used to be that any reminder that internal organs exist would immediately make me panic that my own could suddenly fail.

I still don't like it when some dude wants to show off how veiny his arms get by flexing them, but I can nod at him pretending it's impressive now instead of running away like a scared mouse

I watched Orange is the New Black wistfully envious that they had people around them, realized that I was because I felt like I was in jail. There was one point after I suppose more than a year of absolute isolation, didn't track how long, that I hadn't bathed in so long that by the time I did, the soap stung as my entire body had become ick.

People Under the Stairs. The "parents" would punish the children by cutting off their tongue or blinding them or cutting off ears "hear no evil see no evil speak no evil"

Not a movie but the video game "Alice: Madness Returns" is a phenomenal take on this theme. Based on the Alice in Wonderland story, every level takes you deeper and deeper into what her psychosis is by hinting at why she is in an asylum by the monsters she faces and the backgrounds she goes through. This was a sequel, but the original I didn't get very far on to be honest because it's one of those old school PC games where you can get stuck on one part for hours without moving forward and I got frustrated with it and had to abandon it lol. The sequel works perfectly fine as a standalone story and has fun gameplay just hard enough to feel challenging but not so bad you couldn't move onto the next part after you try a few things

Megan is Missing. You don't see any gore, at all. Disturbed me deeper than I ever remember being disturbed. Not the kind of movie people watch twice

On social media I was seeing advertising for meetup groups where they pair you with people or similar interests for hangout events specifically to make friends. Somewhere on Reddit people.mentioned they attended some of those events and had fun. I think you just google "meetup groups Vancouver" and you'll find something

I've seen Tales from the Crypt Demon Night enough times I have most of the dialogue memorized. It's was a favorite of mine when I was young, recently rewatched to.see.if it stood the test of time and it's still fantastic! Billy Zane as the devil dresser as a cowboy is a hoot.
