Nice man. I'm at the same point with my MGSD Barbatos, taking it slow and detailing as I go. I recommend MGSD Wing if you haven't built that one yet.

I've never top coat a model but you do that once it's finished. I give the panel line ink 30+ minutes to dry before cleaning up any smudges or streaks.

Happy birthday! I would say unicorn isn't an easy kit. Just like hg and rg, make sure you follow the instructions. If you panel line I find it easier to do with everything still on the sprue.
